Leaving a mark

WESTFIELD — After her final home basketball game at Westfield Academy, Wolverines Head Coach Chris Dole said Tanleigh Bestine has “left her mark” at the school.

Now, she is ready to leave a mark on another program.

Bestine put pen to paper on an NCAA celebratory signing form on Monday afternoon at Westfield Academy, surrounded by family and friends, as she made her official declaration of commitment to play NCAA Division III women’s basketball at St. John Fisher University in Rochester.

Bestine is a three-sport varsity athlete at Westfield, in volleyball and softball, in addition to her stellar career on the basketball court. She passed Sophia DeMarco to become the second-leading scorer in Westfield history earlier this year. Only Amy Bertrando finished with more points in Westfield girls basketball history.

Joining Bertrando, DeMarco and the other Westfield Academy greats in the trophy case outside the high school gym was a driving force for Bestine throughout her career.

“Seeing those balls in the trophy cases, I just wanted my name to be in there so badly,” Bestine said.

Bestine has always been a leader on the court, drawing rave reviews from her coaches in all three sports highlighting her character. But when it came to the recruiting process, she said putting herself out there to get noticed was “challenging.”

However, once she visited St. John Fisher University, she knew it was where she wanted to be.

“Once I went to St. John Fisher, I just fell in love with the campus. It was awesome,” Bestine said.

So now, Bestine’s career will continue in Rochester. Led by head coach Melissa Kuberka, the NCAA Division III Cardinals went 24-5 last season and qualified for the D-III National Championship Tournament after winning the Empire 8 title this year.

“The program is just amazing. They just won another Empire 8 Championship,” Bestine said. “Their coach is amazing; I love the way she coaches. … It’s just such a fun environment.”

Bestine will be studying early childhood education at St. John Fisher University. She has already had a head start by volunteering to work with fifth-grade students and preschoolers as a school intern. With three younger brothers, Bestine’s passion for mentoring younger children has only grown over the years.

Rather than picking one specific moment in her career as a highlight, Bestine instead mentioned the relationships she built with her friends across the sports she played at Westfield. Sydney Hotchkiss and Eva Gnadzinski were among those at her side on Monday as athletes who shared the same uniform as Bestine in all three seasons through volleyball, basketball, and softball. They each have played an instrumental role as Westfield moved away from merged programs in all three sports to reclaim the school’s own identity.

Bestine is proud to have “helped build back up the program.” She will have one more season with her friends this spring, on the softball field down the steep hill behind the school where her own name will be enshrined next to the other greats of blue and white.

“All my friends and my teammates are amazing. They, and all my coaches, have made this time be the best time ever,” Bestine said. “I’m very sad to leave, but I feel like I left my mark.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
