SINCLAIRVILLE — Cassadaga Valley and Chautauqua Lake were locked in a pitching duel on Friday and it was the Cougars coming out on top.

After pitching 6 1/3 innings, during which he struck out 15 batters and gave up two hits and three walks, Hunter Johnson found himself at the plate for some heroics in the bottom of the eighth inning. With two outs and runners in scoring position, a Johnson single brought home Logan Hayward to secure the 3-2 victory in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 action.

Devin Hewes was just as good for Chautauqua Lake, pitching 7 2/3 innings, during which he just gave up one earned run on two walks and five hits while striking out 15. Hewes only left the game when he reached the 105-pitch limit in the eighth inning.

The Eagles extended the game in the top of the seventh after Cassadaga Valley plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Chautauqua Lake led off the inning with a walk by Hewes and he stole second before being advanced to third by Nate Henry. Then Henry followed suit with a stolen base and Clayton Smith drove a sacrifice fly to right field that scored both Hewes and Henry.

Henry was awarded home as the Cassadaga Valley right fielder stepped out of play.

Chautauqua Lake’s (4-4, 4-2) offense was answering Cassadaga Valley’s sixth inning that saw Brad Windnagle double and get knocked home by a Greg Edson RBI single. Edson was then hit home by Calvin Hilliker’s RBI single to go up 2-0.

The Cougars (3-3, 3-2) offense finished with a double from Windnagle, two hits by Hilliker, and singles from Owen Pierce and Edson. Mason Rhodes finished the game on the hill and collected the win as Johnson checked out.

RANDOLPH — Carter Capozzi and Madden Ley hit home runs to lead Gowanda past Randolph 11-5 in Division 3 play.

Capozzi went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Jayden Fish was 2 for 5 for the Panthers (8-1, 7-0), who led 4-2 before a five-run top of the fifth inning. Logan Ruff and Brayden Smith combined for seven strikeouts on the mound.

Tristan Farnham was 2 for 3 with a double and three runs scored; Bryson Pitts had two hits and a run scored; and Wyatt Weaver doubled for the Cardinals (0-10, 0-7). Farnham and David Malone combined for six strikeouts on the mound.
