Frewsburg’s nine-run first inning sinks Brocton

FREWSBURG — Junior Chase Haglund led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run and Frewsburg coasted past Brocton 11-0 in five innings of Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 baseball Thursday at the Robert H. Jackson Sports Complex.

Haglund finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored; senior Garrett Brink was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI; junior Maddox Sheesley had two hits, scored a run and drove in a run; and seniors Blake Weaver and Harrison Eckert both doubled for the Bears (11-0, 6-0).

Brink threw a one-hitter with eight strikeouts and two walks on the mound.

Nate Laurito had the lone hit for the Bulldogs (2-3, 2-3) and also stole a base.

TWO BIG INNINGS

CATTARAUGUS — Gowanda scored five runs in the third inning and seven more in the fifth to beat Cattaraugus-Little Valley 14-4 in Division 3 action.

Blake Herman had two hits, three runs scored and an RBI to lead the Panthers (7-1, 6-0) on offense. Carter Capozzi doubled, scored a run and drove in a run, while five other Gowanda players had a hit. Ben VanNote and Jayden Fish each drove in a pair of runs.

Capozzi, Brayden Smith and Kyan Austin combined for seven strikeouts in a four-hitter.

D.J. Szata, Camden Young, Nate Wolf and Brice Corbin each singled for the Timberwolves (1-7, 0-6).

TROJANS

POUND OUT 18 HITS

LAKEWOOD — Ten players had hits as Southwestern pounded out 18 total en route to a 24-6 Division 1 victory over Falconer at Packard Field.

The Golden Falcons (3-6, 1-5) took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Gage Swanson singled and Anthony Wood doubled before Erik Stenstrom hit a two-run double. Gavin Curtis followed with another double, Stenstrom scored on a passed ball and Curtis scored on a dropped third strike.

The Trojans (8-1, 5-1) answered quickly. Judd Harris led off with a single and Jameson Walsh walked with one out before Peter Conley hit a two-run double. Chase Kartesz followed with an RBI double and Wilson Genareo walked before Kartesz scored on a passed ball. Oscar Harris then hit a two-run home run to make it 6-4.

Genareo settled down on the mound, striking out nine and walking two to pick up the victory.

Judd Harris, Walsh and Kartesz each had three hits, while George Marshall and Alex Watkins each had two hits for the Trojans.

Stenstrom finished with two doubles and Wood had two hits for Falconer.

HILLBILLIES PULL AWAY LATE

SALAMANCA — Fredonia led 3-2 entering the top of the fifth inning and chased Salamanca starting pitcher Jaxson Ross before scoring nine runs to beat the Warriors 12-2 in Division 1 action at Veterans Memorial Park.

Owen Rush went 3 for 3 with two doubles, four RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Hillbillies (6-1, 4-0) on offense as eight players scored at least one run for the second straight game. Ashton Putney hit a two-run single and scored twice; Colin Luce had a two-run single; Matt Cowan walked three times and scored twice; Brady Helmer and A.J. Kinney each had an RBI single and a run scored; and Nathan Sercu singled and scored a run.

Rush allowed four hits and walked two while striking out two on the mound.

Payton Bradley (RBI double) and Jaxson Ross were both 2 for 3 for the Warriors (7-4, 2-4). Ross struck out seven in four-plus innings on the mound.

CATANESE STRONG

ON MOUND

CLYMER — Tate Catanese struck out 11 in a six-hitter with two walks as Clymer/Sherman/Panama beat Maple Grove 8-1 in Division 2 action.

The Wolfpack (4-2, 4-1) led early after Catanese hit a sacrifice fly and Grant Lictus drove in two with a triple. In the second inning, Kaden Beckerink hit an RBI double and Gavin Burchanowski hit an RBI groundout.

Nate Cornell drove in the lone run for the Red Dragons (4-4, 2-3).

SMITH, HENRY

LEAD EAGLES

SOUTH DAYTON — Clayton Smith was 3 for 4 with a double and two runs scored, while Nate Henry singled three times and drove in three runs as Chautauqua Lake beat Pine Valley 14-4 in Division 2 play.

Michael Jauss started for the Eagles (4-3, 4-1), allowing three hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out 10 and walking two in five innings on the mound. Henry pitched the final two innings, striking out five.

Devin Hewes went 2 for 3 with four RBIs and two runs scored; Greyson Wellman was 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored; Nolan Olson had two hits, including a double, and a run scored; Jauss had two hits and two runs scored; and Connor Nowicki had two hits, an RBI and three runs scored for Chautauqua Lake.

The Panthers fell to 0-7 overall and 0-6 in the league.

DUNKIRK HOLDS

ON IN 7TH

OLEAN — Dunkirk broke an 8-8 tie with a two-run top of the seventh inning and then survived the bottom of the frame to beat Olean 10-9 in Division 1 action.

Anthony Cosme was hit by a pitch to open the seventh for the Marauders (5-4, 3-2). He eventually advanced to third and scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Greg Orcutt. Paul Trippy III then reached on an infield single and Josh Lemanski walked to put runners at first and third. Another walk to Donnie Jackson loaded the bases before Trippy scored on a passed ball.

In the bottom of the seventh, pinch-runner Joseph Mest scored on a passed ball and Caine DeGolier went to third on the same pitch, but Cosme struck out the final batter of the game.

Trippy had two hits and two RBIs, while Henry Leone also drove in two runs for Dunkirk.

Aaron Vincent had two hits, including a double, while Cal Vogtli also had two hits and drove in two runs for the Huskies (2-4, 2-1).

WARSAW DOES IT ALL

NORTH COLLINS — Matt Warsaw threw a five-inning three-hitter with nine strikeouts and one walk to lead North Collins to a 11-1 Division 3 win over Ellicottville.

Warsaw helped himself with a 2-for-4 day at the plate that included a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Zander Miller doubled twice, drove in a run and scored twice, while Scott Armbruster had two hits and two runs scored for North Collins (8-0, 7-0), which led 11-0 after three innings.

Hunter Smith doubled, while Owen Chudy and Parker John each singled for Ellicottville (2-5, 1-5).
