Silver Creek softball knocks off Gowanda; Lucas is perfect for Fredonia in D1 West

GOWANDA — The Silver Creek softball team has gotten off to a strong start and on Friday the Black Knights showed they were the real deal as they traveled to face the No. 2 Class C team in the state, Gowanda.

Rylee Weiskerger gave up just two hits and collected 10 strikeouts in the circle as Silver Creek stymied Gowanda 8-0 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 East action.

The Silver Creek (7-1, 4-0) offense also showed up collecting 10 hits. Weiskerger had three, Priya Sakpal and Maddie Blair hit two apiece, and Kyla Ziegler, Stephanie VanCheri and Molly Becker each had one.

Addison Kota started the game in the circle and went three innings in which she struck out seven and Gracie Eddy finished the game. Both of the Gowanda (9-1, 4-1) hits came from Kota and Eddy.

CARDS CRUISE

BROCTON — Sadie Steward went 5 for 5 with a triple as the Randolph offense exploded in its 24-4 victory over Brocton in Division 1 East play.

Donnilynn Sheldon went 3 for 3 with a double for the Cardinals (2-4, 1-2) and Aryana Sears also finished 3 for 3. Aliza Hind recorded nine strikeouts in the circle.

Brocton (1-6, 0-5) was led by Paige Miller with a double and Madison Sears was the losing pitcher.

LUCAS TOSSES PERFECT GAME

WEST ELLICOTT — Fredonia senior Jordan Lucas threw her second career perfect game in a 10-0 Division 1 West shutout of Southwestern.

Lucas struck out a career-high 20 batters, the other out coming via groundout by the Trojans’ Arianna Silakowski in the fifth inning.

The Hillbillies (7-0, 6-0) gave Lucas four runs of support in the top of the first inning. Ellie VanDette’s two-run double keyed the uprising.

Fredonia added three runs in the third inning before eighth-grader Jenna Fryberger hit a two-run double in the fifth inning to make it 9-0 in her first varsity game.

Madi Burnett struck out nine and walked three in a seven-hitter for Southwestern (3-5, 2-4).

GRUBER IMPRESSES IN THE CIRCLE

SOUTH DAYTON — Megan Gruber allowed two hits, struck out 12 and didn’t issue a walk to pace Forestville to a 13-0 Division 1 East five-inning victory over Pine Valley.

The Hornets (4-2, 2-2), who are ranked 11th in this week’s New York State Sportswriters Association Class D poll, scored seven runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back.

Emily Lillie (RBI), Aspen VanArsdale and Carilene Sliwa led the way offensively for the winners with two hits apiece, and Gruber helped her own cause with an RBI single.

Danica Farnham took the loss for the Panthers (2-5, 1-2).

HORTON LEADS PANAMA TO WIN

SINCLAIRVILLE — Kaitlyn Horton hit a single, double and a triple with two RBIs to lead Panama past Cassadaga Valley 13-3 in Division 2 West.

Kiera Loberg added two hits with a double and a RBI; Stephanie Hovey hit a double; and Jessica Lyon, Kylie Morgan and Cassie Lyon each had a hit.

Panama (3-4, 2-3) had two pitchers work in the circle with Emma Cooper and Jessica Lynon combining for five strikeouts, three walks and five hits.

Cassadaga Valley (1-6, 0-5) went with Andrea Johnson in the circle striking out six, walking six and giving up nine hits. The Cougars received hits from Hailey Meyers, Emiley Anderson, Denza Fanara, Hailey Anderson and Johnson.

FALCONER TAKES ‘ELECTRIC’ GAME

ST. BONAVENTURE — A four-run fourth inning was enough offense for Falconer as the Golden Falcons held off Olean for a 3-2 Division 1 West win at St. Bonaventure University’s Joyce Field.

Hannah Melquist led off the fourth inning with a single and went to second on Mylie Zarenek’s sacrifice bunt. Emily Zaranek followed with an RBI triple, Katrina Schrantz had an RBI single and Nazariah Neal hit an RBI triple to make it 3-0.

The Huskies (3-3, 3-2) answered with two runs in the fifth inning. Riley Sudbrook and Emma Edwards reached on two-out errors ahead of back-to-back singles by Ava Finch and Amy Campbell. But Emily Rhinehart, Falconer’s starter in the circle, got out of the inning with a flyout.

Olean got a runner on with a two-out walk in the seventh and stole second base, but the game ended on a groundout to third base.

Rhinehart doubled, Melquist had two hits and Neal was 2 for 3 for the Golden Falcons (6-2, 4-1). Rhinehart struck out five and walked one in the win.

“This game was electric and had all the emotions of a playoff game,” Falconer head coach Kayleigh Sieber said.

PORTVILLE BREEZES PAST EAGLES

NORTH COLLINS — Bella Morales and Ella Warters combined on a one-hitter with four strikeouts as Portville beat North Collins 15-0 in Division 2 East play.

Mattison Foster went 3 for 3 with a double, a home run and three runs scored; Madison Ford had three hits and two runs scored; Warters had three hits, three RBIs and four runs scored; and Autumn Baker doubled and drove in three runs for the Panthers (7-1, 5-0).

Novalee Schlenker had the lone hit for the Eagles (3-7, 2-2). Cate Ayers struck out three and walked seven in the circle.
