Silver Creek softball outduels Hornets

FORESTVILLE — It was a pitcher’s duel in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 East softball action on Thursday and Maddie Blair came out on top securing Silver Creek the 2-1 victory.

Blair went six innings for the Black Knights with nine strikeouts, three walks and did not allow a hit, while Megan Gruber pitched a complete game for Forestville in which she struck out four and walked one batter.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Silver Creek’s bats got the job done when Priya Sakpal’s hit drove in both Kyla Ziegler and Makayla Kelly to go up 2-1. Steph VanCheri, Rylee Weiskerger, Kelly, Sakpal and Blair collected the hits for Silver Creek (5-1, 2-0).

Forestville (2-1, 0-1) got on the board first in the fourth inning when Emily Lillie reached home on an error as Aspen VanArsdale’s hit was misplayed by the Silver Creek defense.


BEMUS POINT — Cayzlee Johnson stayed hot at the plate for Chautauqua Lake, hitting a double and a triple with two RBIs as the Eagles defeated Maple Grove 11-1 in Division 2 West action.

Johnson also pitched the first five innings with seven strikeouts, a walk, two hit batters and gave up just two hits. Alexis Szumigala pitched the final two innings for the Eagles and struck out one batter while giving up four hits.

Chautauqua Lake (3-1, 3-0) scored six of its 11 runs in the second inning when it had six hits. Lucy Gates finished the game with a pair of doubles and two RBIs, while both Alice Scarpine and Karagan Fairbank had two hits.

Maple Grove’s offense was led by Dani Trim and Lydia Darr, who had two hits each, and Alex Halstrom had the lone RBI with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Darr pitched a complete game for the Red Dragons (1-3, 1-2) with five strikeouts, seven walks and 11 hits.
