Dunkirk boys win team track title at Section VI Class A Championships

The Dunkirk boys track & field team felt right at home Thursday night in the Section VI Class A Championships.

Literally.

Performing on its own track, the Marauders claimed the team title with 75 points to edge Iroquois, which finished with 72.3 points. Pioneer was third with 69.3, followed by Cheektowaga with 51 and Maryvale with 49 to round out the top five teams in the 14-team field.

Meanwhile, the Dunkirk girls team placed ninth with 18 points. Iroquois was the winner with 118 points, followed by Starpoint with 112, Williamsville East with 101, Lake Shore with 46 and Amherst with 41 to complete the top five.

Individually, three Marauders earned first-place finishes. They were Lucas Lawrie in the 800 meters (2:01.06); Michael Hanlon in the 400-meter hurdles (56.51); and Johnee Thomas in the 400 meters (50.13).

Also turning in fine performances for the Dunkirk boys were Edward Jourden, third, 1,600 meters (4:44.84); the 400-meter relay, third (43:89); Nathan Carlson, fourth, 200 meters (23.55); and Jareese Gains, fourth, high jump (5-8)

Earning third-place finishes for the Dunkirk girls were Hanan Mohamad Narvaez in the 2,000-meter steeplechase (8:06.54); and Amilcar Ceteno in the 800 meters (2:30.91), while Felicity Cooper placed fourth in the pole vault (8 feet, 6 inches).

ROGER MARKHAM SETS RECORD

ALDEN — Roger Markham made history in the Section VI Class B meet.

The sophomore from Falconer Central School broke the school’s long jump record with a leap of 22 feet, 6 inches that shattered the old mark of 21-7 shared by Stu Abbott (1958) and Devin Austin (2022).

Markham’s effort hit the super standard, which qualified him for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships next month.
