Pucci, Koopman shine as Fredonia downs Hamburg

HAMBURG — Fredonia flag football coach Nick Bertrando is quick to point out how “very fortunate” the Hillbillies were to get Francesca Pucci back this season.

“Last year, she went down in practice and ended up tearing her ACL,” Bertrando said. “I’m proud of her mental toughness and her physical therapy to get to this point.”

Where is that exactly?

Atop the Section VI rushing leaderboard.

Pucci rushed for 94 yards and one touchdown and Ella Koopman gained 120 yards on the ground and found the end zone three times as Fredonia closed the regular season with a 27-7 victory over Hamburg on Friday.

Pucci now has 1,118 yards rushing, tops in the section, and has scored 11 touchdowns.

“We were very fortunate to get her back,” said Bertrando. “It’s not only her accomplishment, but it’s also a team accomplishment. It’s really a special moment for her.”

The win raised the Hillbillies’ record to 12-1 overall and 7-1-0 in Division 2B.

Last night, Fredonia was tied with the Bulldogs 7-7 at halftime, but scored three TDs after the break to put the game away.

Other individual highlights for the Hillbillies included: Natalie DiPalma (32 yards) Emma Patterson (17 yards) and Keilany Diaz (15 yards) helping out on the ground; and Diaz (36 yards) leading in pass receiving. Defensively, Brianna Whitfield had four flag pulls and one interception; Elizabeth Morris collected four flag pulls and four sacks; Gracia Domenico added one defended pass and four flag pulls and Madalyn Polhamus picked off a pass.
