Westfield, Dunkirk baseball come up short

WESTFIELD — Frewsburg scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning and overcame five errors to beat Westfield 3-1 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 baseball Tuesday.

Trent Lewis singled with one out in the seventh inning and went to second on a passed ball, but was caught attempting to steal third for the second out of the inning. Chase Haglund then walked and stole second before Garrett Brink hit the go-ahead RBI single. Following another stolen base, Brink scored on Maddox Sheesley’s RBI single to right field.

Eighth-grader Joey Russo reached on an infield single to open the bottom of the seventh inning, but Sheesley secured the win by striking out the next three Westfield batters.

Vinny Sanfilippo pitched the first five innings of two-hit ball, striking out five and walking three while allowing one unearned run for the Bears (12-0, 7-0). Sheesley struck out five and allowed two hits in two innings of relief.

Chris Vacanti took the loss with a complete-game six-hitter, striking out four and walking four on the mound for the Wolverines (0-5, 0-5). Tristen Phillips doubled in defeat.

MARAUDERS FALL IN 8

HAMBURG — Dunkirk and Frontier went into extra innings tied 2-2 before the Falcons walked off with a 4-3 victory in eight innings.

Dylan Bankoski was hit by a pitch and scored on a Paul Trippy III RBI double to give the Marauders (7-6, 5-3 CCAA D1) a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth inning. With two outs, Thomas Shaffer walked and Josh Lemanski was hit by a pitch, but Frontier’s Jacob Hudson got out of the bases-loaded jam with a strikeout.

In the bottom of the frame, Ethan Hediger reached on an error before Hudson hit an RBI double to tie the game. Nick Shea then laid down a sacrifice bunt and Hudson later scored on a passed ball.

Anthony Piede and Trippy each had two hits, including a double, for Dunkirk. Zachary Zentz and Josh Lemanski each added a pair of singles. Anthony Cosme started on the mound and threw four innings of one-hit ball, striking out one, walking two and allowing an unearned run.
