Westfield softball sweeps Dunkirk in doubleheader

WESTFIELD — Mackenzie Schumaker went 3 for 3 with two triples and a double in Game 1, and Eva Gnadzinski doubled twice and drove in three runs in Game 2 as Westfield swept a nonleague softball doubleheader from Dunkirk, 9-2 and 13-3 on Monday.

Gnadzinski threw three innings of one-hit ball with four strikeouts and two walks in Game 1 before freshman Avery Smith earned her first varsity win with 2 1/3 innings of three-hit shutout ball in Game 2. She struck out three.

The Wolverines scored in all four innings that they batted in Game 1. Schumaker drove in three runs; Sydney Hotchkiss had two hits, including a double; Keara Kincaid doubled and drove in two runs; Brynn Ernewein doubled; and Gnadzinski tripled.

Eva Colon-DeJesus, Brooke Szymczak and Kassidy Donisi each doubled for the Marauders.

Westfield scored all 13 of its runs in the first four innings of Game 2.

Tanleigh Bestine had two hits, including a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored; Schumaker had two hits, including a double; Madyson Burgess had a pair of singles; Drew Ernewein had two hits, including a triple; and Brynn Ernewein was 3 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored.

For Dunkirk, Szymczak had two hits, including a double, and Mackenzie Curry had a double.

FALCONER PULLS AWAY FROM TROJANS

FALCONER — After recognizing seniors Angelina Fiasco and Jerzie Smith, Falconer jumped out to a great start. In the circle, Emily Rhinehart retired three straight batters on strikes, allowing Falconer’s offense to take over.

Hannah Melquist’s bat remained hot as she opened the game with her first of four total hits, and eventually went on to score as Falconer (9-3, 5-2) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead.

The game remained rather even, until the fourth inning when the top of the lineup started the inning for the Golden Falcons. Rhinehart was hit by a pitch and promptly stole second. The ball was overthrown, allowing Rhinehart to move to third. Hannah Melquist belted yet another single to start the scoring rally. Emily Zaranek, Katrina Schrantz, Nylah Sharpe, Khloe Livengood and Fiasco each contributed a hit as the Falcons went on to plate nine runs.

Rhinehart went the distance in the circle and struck out 12 while allowing one hit.

Peyton Lillie had the lone hit for the Trojans (3-8, 2-7).

FARNHAM LEADS PINE VALLEY

SOUTH DAYTON — Danica Farnham’s two-run triple in the fourth inning made it 4-0 and Pine Valley went on to beat Cassadaga Valley 10-0 in nonleague play.

Olivia Lawton had an RBI single, while Sandy Ivett and Alyssa West each had a double and an RBI for the Panthers (3-9, 1-6 CCAA D1 East).

Farnham allowed four hits, struck out nine and walked two in the shutout.

Andrea Johnson struck out nine in the circle for the Cougars (3-9, 1-6 CCAA D2 West). She also went 2 for 3 at the plate.

FOUR HAVE MULTIPLE HITS FOR PANAMA

PANAMA — Kylie Range had two hits, including a double, while Sharayah Fuller, Sarah Harvey and Kaitlyn Horton each added two hits as Panama beat Maple Grove 14-5 in Division 2 West action.

Jessica Lyon earned the win in the circle with three strikeouts and one walk. Corinne Hovey added a hit for the Panthers (5-6, 4-5).

Dani Trim had three hits, including a double and a triple, with four RBIs for the Red Dragons (2-9, 2-7). Alex Caldwell and Bry Cornell added two hits apiece.
