Hilliker wins 7th Travel League event of season

VENANGO, Pa. — The Wednesday Travel League was able to complete this week’s event at Venango Valley Golf Course with frequent soft rains, but with no heavy storms.

Josh Hilliker won his league-best seventh event of the season with the low round of 74. Robert Calph finished second with 77 and Bob North was third with 80. Hilliker and Calph each shot 37 to lead the front nine and Hilliker led the back nine with 37. Hilliker also earned his 30th career tour victory, becoming the ninth golfer to reach that milestone.

Phil Hopkins was the B Flight champion, and the winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Jaime Galarza.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight, Calph (No. 1) and Tom Sacilowski (No. 5); B Flight, Dave Franklin (Nos.1, 18), Galarza (No. 2), Joe Bifaro (No. 5), Gary Haase (No. 6), Hopkins (No. 9) and Jack Hood (No. 17).

Closest to the pin were North (Nos. 4 and 13), Jeff Nelson (No. 11) and Dave Wallace (No. 16). Winners of the steeplechase were Calph in A Flight and John Waterman in B Flight.

Top point winners were North (20), and Calph and Franklin (15 apiece). Season points leaders (through 11 events) are: 1. Hilliker (336), 2. Haase (191), 3. Nelson (147), 4. Calph (132), 5. Sacilowski (131), 6. Wallace (127), 7. North (123), 8. Ed Tofil (116), 9. Pete Pinkoski (101), 10. Bob Kujawa and Franklin (76 apiece).

This week the league will hold its third annual “Uncle Buck Classic,” honoring the memory of Edward “Butch” Mackowiak, at Chautauqua Golf Club’s Lake Course.
