Hilliker claims 9th Travel League win of season

RANDOLPH — Josh Hilliker captured his Wednesday Travel League-leading ninth victory of the season with a 76 at Cardinal Hills Golf Course.

Hilliker now has 32 career wins, moving into a tie for eighth place all-time with Joe Piwowarski.

Robert Calph came in second place with 80, while Ed Tofil and Jeff Nelson each shot 82 for third place. Nelson and Ken Kaus tied for the low front nine with 37s and Hilliker led the back nine with 38. Dave Criscione and Joe Bifaro won the B and C Flights, respectively. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Lou Polichetti.

All golfers wore red shirts, as is a long-standing league tradition. The order of finish in the “Red Shirt” contest were: first place — Criscione’s “Cherry” Crush (team Capt. Dave Criscione); second place — “Red” Tofils (Capt. Ed Tofil); third place — Conti Apple Reds (Capt. Joe Conti); fourth place — Ron’s Burgundy’s (Capt. Ron Szach); fifth place — Scarlet Sacilowskis (Capt. Tom Sacilowski); sixth place — Kasz’s Crimson Knights (Capt. Dan Kaszuba).

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Kaus (Nos. 4 and 6), Hilliker (Nos. 7 and 17), Conti (No. 9), Tofil (No. 11) and Dave Wallace (No. 18); B Flight — Pete Pinkoski (No. 3), Lenny Leszkowicz (No. 8), Dave Franklin (No. 12), Mick Dunning Sr. (No. 15) and Gary Haase (No. 18); C Flight — Bob Kujawa (Nos. 1 and 7), Tom Destro (Nos. 2 and 13), Joe Bifaro (No. 4), Jack Hood (Nos. 8, 17 and 18), Don Kujawa (No.10) and Pat Weaver (Nos. 14 and 15).

Closest to the pin were: Dennis Gawronski Sr. (No. 4), Conti (No. 9) and Tofil (No. 11, just 1 foot from the cup). Winners of the Steeplechase were: Tofil (A Flight), Criscione (B) and Kaszuba (C).

Top point winners were: Tofil (44), Conti (36), Kaus (32) and Bifaro (28). Season points leaders (through 14 events): 1. Hilliker (446), 2. Haase (266), 3. Pinkoski (218), 4. Calph (216), 5. Ed Tofil became just the second golfer in league history to reach 6,000 career points.

This week the league plays Scenic Heights in Wattsburg, Pennsylvania with a 10 a.m. start. Golfers are asked to be signed up by noon today.
