Baron captures Travel League’s US Open title
KANE, Pa. — The Wednesday Travel League held its third major of the season, the “U.S. Open,” last Monday at Kane Country Club.
Mike Baron, visiting from Mesa, Arizona, was the overall winner, posting a new league course record of 72, breaking the old record of 73, held by Ed Tofil.
Josh Hilliker finished second with 74 and Tofil came in third with 78. Baron now has three major victories and 13 career tour victories. Hilliker led the front nine with a 1-under-par 34 and Baron led the back nine with 37. Pete Pinkoski was the B Flight champion. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Bob Kujawa.
Hilliker was the top point winner of the week with 69 points, and in the process broke the single-season point record of 639.25, set by Baron in 2010, in his only full season on tour. Hilliker, already with 658 points, still has three-plus months to add to his impressive record. He also set the single-season record for closest to the pins with 16, breaking the long-standing record of 14, set by John Binkiwitz in 2003.
Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Gary Haase (No. 2), Baron (Nos. 3, 15), Hilliker (Nos. 6, 7, 8), Jeff Nelson (No. 14), Tofil (No. 18); B Flight — Tom Sacilowski (No. 3), Joe Bifaro (No. 11), Jack Hood (No. 12), Tony Destro (No. 17), Pinkoski (No. 18).
Closest to the pin were: Haase (No. 5), Hilliker (Nos. 7, 14) and Tofil (No. 17). Winners of the Steeplechase were: Tofil in A Flight and Ron Szach in B Flight. Winners of the par-3 contest were: Mike Willoughby (even-par) in A Flight and Tony Destro (plus-2) in B Flight.
Top point winners were: Hilliker (69), Baron and Tofil (35 apiece) and Haase (25). Season points leaders (through 19 events): 1. Hilliker (658), 2. Haase (299), 3. Tofil (281), 4. Gary Haase moved past Bob Thompson for 11th place on the all-time points list. Tofil recorded his league-record 90th round below 80.
This week the league plays Downing Golf Course in Harborcreek, Pennsylvania, with a 9:30 a.m. start.
