Fredonia can’t find equalizer, Southwestern puts game away late

FREDONIA — Southwestern defeated Fredonia 3-1 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division I boys soccer Wednesday night at SUNY Fredonia.

Seth Vaughn opened the scoring for the Trojans (5-1-0, 3-0-0) in the 23rd minute. Southwestern took a 2-0 lead three minutes later on a goal by Grey Kidder. Connor Young had the assist.

The Hillbillies (2-2-1, 2-1-0) got to within 2-1 with five minutes remaining in the first half on a goal by A.J. Kinney.

Young scored Southwestern’s third goal with eight minutes remaining in regulation for the final margin.

Andrew Cowan had 13 saves in net for Fredonia, which travels to Allegany-Limestone on Monday for a 7 p.m. matchup. Southwestern, which received four saves from Cooper Charles, plays host to Lackawanna in a nonleague matchup Saturday.

DUNKIRK COMES UP SHORT

ALLEGANY — Dunkirk was unable to crack the Allegany-Limestone defense in a 1-0 loss to the Gators in Division I play.

Greg Orcutt Jr. made seven saves in net for the Marauders (1-4-1, 0-3-0).

“I think we played very well tonight. They gave everything. I couldn’t ask for much more,” Dunkirk head coach Zachary Meadows said. “They pushed Allegany to its limit.”

HENRY NETS HAT TRICK

SILVER CREEK — Nate Henry netted a hat trick and added a pair of assists to lead Chautauqua Lake past Silver Creek/Forestville 9-2 in Division III action.

Travis Horvath added a pair of goals and an assist; Michael Horvath had a goal and an assist; Kameron Press, Liam Swan and Aden Gollhardt each added a goal; Lincoln Smith had three assists; and Ben Carlson chipped in an assist for the Eagles (3-3-0, 2-1-0).

Brendan Klossner made 11 saves in net for Chautauqua Lake and even added an assist.

The Black Knights fell to 2-2-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the league.

DOHERTY HAS BIG DAY

ELLICOTTVILLE — Owen Doherty had two goals and two assists as Ellicottville shut out Cassadaga Valley/Falconer 4-0 in Division II action.

Doherty scored from Christopher Edwards in the eighth minute and then assisted on Kyle Robinson’s goal in the ninth minute as the Eagles led 2-0 at halftime.

After the break, Rian Johnson scored from Doherty in the 68th minute and Doherty scored from Kyle Robinson in the 70th minute.

Nathan Bailey made nine saves in net for the Golden Cougars (1-4-1, 0-3-0).

Jackson Kruszynski made two saves in the clean sheet for Ellicottville (2-3-1, 2-1-0).

GOODLOW NETS WINNER

JAMESTOWN — Tavion Goodlow scored from Ben DeFord in the 52nd minute as Jamestown shut out Olean 1-0 in Division I action at Strider Field.

Evan Maloney made six saves in net for the clean sheet for the Red & Green (2-4-0, 1-2-0).

The Huskies fell to 1-4-1 overall and 0-3-0 in the league.

FREEMAN POURS IN FOUR

SALAMANCA — Cooper Freeman had four goals and an assist to lead Randolph past Salamanca/Cattaraugus-Little Valley 8-0 in Division II play at Veterans Memorial Park.

Cody Slade added two goals and three assists; Jacob Pierce and Griffin Nelson each scored a goal; Drew Hind had two assists; and Isaac Pihlblad had one assist for the Cardinals (7-0-0, 3-0-0).

Delsin Tallchief and Gavin Senn each made a save in the clean sheet.

Carter Light and Cayden Lafferty combined for nine saves in net for the Warwolves (1-4-0, 1-2-0).

WOLVERINES SPREAD IT AROUND

WESTFIELD — Carson Swanson had two goals and an assist as Westfield/Brocton beat North Collins 6-1 in Division III action.

Danny Bratton, Tahner Stow, Nate Laurito and Anthony Cruz each added a goal, while Stow, Tristen Philips, Laurito and Cole Tenamore each had an assist for the Wolverines (4-1-1, 1-0-1).

Nolan Anderson made four saves in the win.

Lucas Demmerly scored from Neven Sheehy for the Eagles (2-2-0, 1-2-0).
