Chautauqua Lake’s Hewes hurls no-hitter
MAYVILLE — Chautauqua Lake scored a third-inning run Monday evening against Brocton.
That’s all Eagles junior ace Devin Hewes would need.
The right-hander threw a no-hitter with seven strikeouts and two walks as Chautauqua Lake beat the Bulldogs 1-0 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 baseball action.
Hewes needed just 85 pitches to complete his masterpiece.
“We’ve seen Devin pitch like this in the past. When he’s dialed in like he was tonight, it makes it really easy for me calling the pitches,” Chautauqua Lake head coach Matt Cummings said. “It’s like playing a video game because he’s so dominant, hitting every spot.”
In Brocton’s half of the third inning, Eric Pryll led off with a walk and went to second on a passed ball. Drew Gustafson then reached on an error before Anthony Gatto hit a ground ball toward first base. The ball eluded the Eagles (3-3, 2-1) first baseman, but second baseman Connor Nowicki, backing up the play, was able to field the grounder and beat Gatto to the first base bag for an out.
With runners at second and third, Michael Garcia flew out to center field and Chautauqua Lake’s Michael Jauss threw a strike to catcher Nate Henry, who tagged out Pryll at the plate.
Pryll also walked with two outs in the fifth inning, but was stranded.
All told, Hewes tossed 1-2-3 innings in the first, second, fourth, sixth and seventh innings.
“Devin has thrown like this before, but this was another level for him,” Cummings said. “He was locked in one pitch at a time with Hank (Nate Henry) behind the plate.”
The Eagles’ run came in the third inning when Jauss walked, went to second on a passed ball, and scored on Clayton Smith’s RBI double to left field.
Smith finished with two outs while Jauss singled and Henry added a double for Chautauqua Lake.
Gatto tossed five innings of four-hit ball, striking out five and walking one for the Bulldogs (4-3, 2-1).
