Forestville stuns Westfield 7-6

FORESTVILLE — Sometimes a simple mistake can decide a game and the Forestville girls softball team taught Westfield that lesson in nonleague action on Monday.

After chasing starting pitcher Eva Gnadzinksi in a bottom of the seventh rally, Avery Smith hoped to extend the game to extra innings and was relied on to get the Wolverines out of a bases loaded jam with one out. Smith’s pitch got Forestville’s Elizabeth Case to ground out to shortstop, but perhaps not realizing there was only one out, the putout at first did not end the inning and Madison Christian was able to run home for the 7-6 winning run.

The Forestville rally began with Emily Lillie hitting a double and was driven home by Megan Gruber. Christian knocked in Gruber before the Wolverines walked the bases loaded which eventually led to Case’s game-winning RBI groundout.

The Hornets (2-0) finished the day Gruber hitting 3 for 4 with a double on top of her seven strikeouts from inside the circle. Lillie also hit 2 for 4 with a double, triple and 2 RBIs.

Westfield (1-1) was led by Gnadzinski in the circle with six strikeouts and she went 2 for 3 with two doubles, while Sydney Hotchkiss hit a double.
