Westfield boys tennis sweeps Dunkirk 5-0

WESTFIELD — After a yearlong hiatus, the Dunkirk boys tennis team was welcomed back by Westfield with a sweep in nonleague boys tennis competition on Thursday.

In singles, Sam Heim defeated Mike Torres 6-0, 6-2 and then Cole Tenamore won second singles against Wyatt Sikes 6-1, 6-1.

Then doubles competition saw Grayson Mazza and Ben Wolfe down the pair of Cheyenne Goldsborough and Danial Mahbas 6-0, 6-2. After that Seth Zelinski and Chris Luna defeated Jianna Cave and Lluvia Diaz 6-0, 6-1, while the duo of Alina Franklin and Lyra Stevenson rolled Thalia Pagan Hernandez and Ian Serrano Rivera 6-0, 6-0.

“I am very pleased with how our team played today,” Dunkirk head coach Connor Aitcheson said. “All of our players are brand new to the sport, so it was great to see them apply what they’ve learned so far in an actual match. … I’m confident that their work ethic will lead them to great personal growth in the coming weeks.”

TROJANS UPEND GATORS

ALLEGANY — The Southwestern boys tennis team swept doubles competition and won second singles to defeat Allegany-Limestone 4-1 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 action.

Nolan Lefler picked up Southwestern’s lone win in singles as he defeated Allegany-Limestone’s Thomas Buffamente 6-1, 6-4. The Trojans (3-0, 2-0) then swept doubles competition with the duo of Miles Moore and Gavin Ternullo winning a thrilling match against Anton Marais and Ippi Patra 7-5, 6-7, 7-5.

Then in second doubles, Matt Persia and Calvin Gesing edged Eshnika Patra and Kaj Wojewoda-ko 6-4, 7-5. In third doubles, Hunter Smith and Oliver Peterson closed out the day strong for Southwestern with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Bryn Olzham and Alijah Connor.

Allegany-Limestone’s only victory came in first singles as Luke Griffin beat Chase Haaksma 6-4, 6-4.

PAIR OF MARATHON MATCHES

PANAMA — First singles and first doubles lasted two-plus hours as Cassadaga Valley beat Panama 3-2.

The Cougars’ Cameron Katilus beat Lincoln Gibbs 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 at first singles.

“It was a hard-fought game,” Panama head coach Josh Nelson said. “Every point was back and forth.”

At first doubles, Cassadaga Valley’s Jakob Huling and Gavin Penhollow topped Blayne Rumahi and Mason Weber 2-6, 7-5, 7-5.
