Worth the trip

Three Dunkirk pitchers combine on a no-hitter in win over Eagles in Cooperstown

COOPERSTOWN — According to Google Maps, the typical trip for a Dunkirk and Chautauqua Lake baseball game is 30 minutes. That trip was a bit longer on Friday — roughly over four hours more — as both teams made the trek together to Cooperstown for a visit and hopes of a game at the Baseball Hall of Fame.

“We decided a while back to go to Cooperstown,” Dunkirk head coach Frank Jagoda stated. “We were planning on playing on Doubleday Field, but Cooperstown High School offered their field to us.”

Playing near baseball’s greats, both teams played a fantastic contest, resulting in a 2-0 combined no-hit victory by the Marauders.

“I give our kids a lot of credit,” Jagoda said about the win. “It’s good to play close ballgames early because you’re going to need that in the future.”

Dunkirk went with three pitchers, starting with Greg Orcutt on a pitch count with a Tuesday rivalry game looming against Fredonia and Ashton Putney. Orcutt struck out seven and walked three over 3 2/3 innings before being relieved by Anthony Cosme and Josh Lesmanski who added two and five strikeouts respectively.

“At this point, our pitching has been real stellar,” Jagoda added. “With Greg on the mound Tuesday versus Putney, he held them down on a pitch count to get ready for Tuesday. I was impressed with (Chautauqua Lake head coach Matt) Cummings throwing six pitchers and having the confidence in each of them. They made it quite a game. We really had to work today to grind out a victory.”

Dunkirk was only able to connect for five hits against the six different Chautauqua Lake pitchers, but they were timely to get the Marauders the lead and ultimately the victory.

“When you throw six different pitchers, you’re getting a different guy the next inning and your rhythm is really thrown off,” Jagoda said. “We had a couple of timely hits by Anthony Piede and Anthony Cosme and a groundball by Henry Leone to get a couple across the board.”

Leone drove in the first run in the third inning, while Piede went 2 for 3 with an RBI in the fifth and Cosme added a pair of hits.

The victory was No. 399 for Jagoda, setting up for an opportunity to notch a milestone victory on Tuesday or Wednesday against rival Fredonia.

“We’re facing the league pitcher and player of the year,” Jagoda said about Tuesday’s matchup in Fredonia. “We’ve got our work cut out for us. The kids are ready. They play with a lot of heart.”

Thanks to Friday’s victory, the Marauders (4-0) have given their coach a chance to achieve some history next week after seeing the rich history of baseball at Cooperstown. Prior to the trip to Cooperstown, only one of Jagoda’s players had visited the Hall of Fame and, thanks to collaboration with Chautauqua Lake (1-2), both teams have crossed it off their bucket lists.

“It was a great experience,” Jagoda stated. “We watched a short movie on the national pastime and the kids really enjoyed that. It’s just so nostalgic to be there with equipment from the mid 1800s, statistics, Ty Cobb’s shoes, Babe Ruth’s original uniform, it’s just a great experience for everyone.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
