4 local golfers qualify for state championships

CHEEKTOWAGA — Amherst’s Jack Lopinski was the only golfer to shoot under par over the two rounds in the Section VI boys golf championship at Diamond Hawk Golf Course on Monday, claiming medalist honors along with a trip to the state championship after a 27-hole score of 106.
Evan Steffen of Maple Grove joined Lopinski under par in the second round after scoring a 74, matching Lopinski’s 35 for a total of 109 to earn the runner-up patch and a return trip to states at Mill Creek Golf Club in Rochester next month.
Fredonia eighth-grader Jordan Kelly fired a first round of 74 and then 38 to tie with Lewiston-Porter’s Desmond Patrick for third place at 112 along with a ticket to states.
Locally, Jamestown’s Evan Maloney placed fifth with a 77 and 36 for 113 and Fredonia’s Ryan Kelly carded a 74 and 41 for 115 to take sixth to make it four Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association golfers of the nine heading to states.
Making the first round cut was Chautauqua Lake/Westfield’s Carson Swanson with a 118 for 11th, Jamestown’s Tyler Salvaggio scored 121 for 16th and Maple Grove’s Baylor Hirliman shot 125 for 20th. In order to reach the second round golfers needed a score of 81 or better.
The team title went to Orchard Park with a score of 307 as a trio of golfers placed in the top 15. Lewiston-Porter was second at 319, Randolph finished third with 364 and Akron took 4th at 395.
