Brocton creates intrigue in final week of Division 2 baseball

CLYMER — Senior Anthony Cruz made his first varsity appearance on the mound Tuesday for Brocton.

And he was dominant.

Cruz tossed three innings of shutout relief, allowing three hits while striking out six as the Bulldogs beat Clymer/Sherman/Panama 5-3 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 3 baseball.

With the win, Brocton improved to 9-3 overall and, more importantly, 7-1 in the division with a pair of games against first-place Frewsburg later this week. Tuesday was the second of six consecutive days of games for the Bulldogs.

The Wolfpack (7-3, 7-2) led 3-2 entering the top of the sixth inning before Ray Santiago hit a one-out double to center field. Two batters later, Owen Pryll hit an RBI single to right field to tie the game.

In the top of the seventh, Drew Gustafson walked and Anthony Gatto reached on an infield single before Michael Garcia hit a go-ahead RBI single to right field. Nathan Laurito then hit an RBI groundout to make it 5-3.

The two-run lead was enough for Cruz, who worked out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh. Tate Catanese walked to open the inning and Andrew Spiesman reached on a single before a strikeout, a popout and another strikeout ended the game.

Gatto started for Brocton and struck out six while allowing seven hits and three runs (one earned) in four innings. Jeremy Weisner doubled for one of the Bulldogs’ seven hits.

For the Wolfpack, Bryce Hinsdale struck out eight while allowing three hits and three runs (none earned) in six innings. Max White doubled while Gavin Burchanowski and Isaiah Burkholder each had two hits.

RED DRAGONS TRIM EAGLES

MAYVILLE — Gavin Darr pitched all seven innings for Maple Grove and gave up one earned run on six hits and three walks with seven strikeouts as the Red Dragons trimmed Chautauqua Lake 7-4 in Division 2.

Darr helped his own cause with an RBI single and Kyle Yohe hit a pair of singles for Maple Grove (4-7, 4-6).

Chautauqua Lake (5-8, 4-6) was led by Nate Henry with a triple in the second inning and an RBI single in the fourth. Devin Hewes pitched 5 1/3 innings for the Eagles and gave up three earned runs while striking out 10 batters.

Starting at $3.50/week.
