Dunkirk closes 9-1 league season, loses to Hamburg

DUNKIRK — Dunkirk (14-3) split a doubleheader Saturday beating Olean 13-3 in five innings ending the league season as Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 champions with a 9-1 record.

Josh Lemanski threw four scoreless innings as the Marauders built up a 10-0 lead. He allowed five hits and two walks while striking out four. Greg Orcutt got the final three outs.

Dunkirk scored in the first as Lemanski was hit by a pitch and stole second before scoring on Anthony Piede’s RBI single.

In the third, Paul Trippy was hit by a pitch to open the frame and stole second. Lemanski bunted and the ball was thrown away, allowing Trippy to score and Lemanski to end up at second base.

After a passed ball, Henry Leone walked and stole second. With two outs, Anthony Cosme hit a two-run single down the third-base line.

In the fourth, Alex Biscaro walked, Gabe Valentine and Trippy each singled and Lemanski walked to force in a run. Orcutt then hit a bases-clearing double making the score 8-0. Orcutt went to third on an errant throw and scored on a Piede sacrifice fly. Leone walked and stole second before scoring on consecutive passed balls to make it 10-0.

Olean scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, Biscaro and Valentine walked and scored on a Trippy triple. Orcutt then drove in Trippy with a fielder’s choice to end the game.

In Game 2 against Hamburg, Dunkirk lost 11-2.

Cosme struck out four in 3 1/ 3 innings while relievers Josh Smith had one strikeout, Thomas Shaffer had two and Biscaro had three.

At the plate Dunkirk had five hits. Danny Hoth and Shaffer doubled, John Bache and Jeyden Nellard singled, and Ryan Kinney had a two-run single.

Dunkirk plays at Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 4 leader Eden on Monday, home against CCAA Division 2 champion Frewsburg on Tuesday and at CCAA Division 3 champion Gowanda on Wednesday.

“We have worked extremely hard to get to where we are and have put ourselves in a position to succeed in the playoffs,” Dunkirk head coach Frank Jagoda said. “The next three games against quality opponents will keep us focused on a bigger prize.”

PETERSON SWINGING HOT STICK

BROCTON — Daniel Peterson went 3 for 4 with a double, a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored to lead Frewsburg past Brocton 16-5 in Division 2 action Saturday.

Maddox Sheesley went 3 for 5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored; Chase Haglund doubled, drove in a run and scored three times; Gavin Weaver and Blake Weaver each had a pair of hits; and Mason Eckman walked four times for the Bears (14-2, 13-0).

Drake Beckstrom threw five innings, allowing six hits and five runs (none earned) while striking out four and walking two. Eckman got the final three outs, including one strikeout.

Michael Garcia singled twice and drove in a pair of runs while Nathan Laurito doubled for the Bulldogs (10-6, 8-4).

LUCAS GENAREO TOSSES GEM

JAMESTOWN — Lucas Genareo threw a complete-game two-hitter with nine strikeouts as Southwestern shut out nonleague Maple Grove 8-0 at Diethrick Park on Sunday.

Wilson Genareo went 2 for 2 with a double, a triple, an RBI and a run scored; Gavin Anderson doubled and scored a run; Lucas Genareo singled, drove in a run and scored a run; and George Marshall singled, drove in a pair of runs and scored a run for the Trojans (7-5, 6-4 CCAA D1).

Drew Oste had both of the hits for the Red Dragons (5-10, 5-8 CCAA D2) and also stole a base.
