Fredonia coasts past Warriors

SALAMANCA — Fredonia scored four runs in the fourth inning and five more in the fifth to turn a one-run lead into a nine-run lead en route to a 14-5 victory over Salamanca in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 baseball Saturday at Veterans Memorial Park.

Through a steady rain, Ashton Putney earned the win on the mound with 6 2/3 innings of four-hit ball, allowing five runs (three earned) while striking out 10 and walking one.

The Hillbillies (4-4, 2-1) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning as Luca Gullo reached on an infield single, went to third on a Colin Luce single and scored on a Colin Crowell sacrifice fly.

In the top of the fourth, Luce and Crowell walked before Brady Crawford’s two-run double gave Fredonia a 3-0 lead.

The Warriors (8-3, 2-3) answered in the bottom of the fourth inning. Connor Seeley and Calum Farnum had RBI singles to make it a 3-2 game, but Putney got out of the inning with a strikeout.

The Hillbillies added four runs in the top of the fifth inning. Matt Cowan walked and Putney singled before Andrew Cowan hit an RBI double. Luce followed with a two-run single and Crowell hit an RBI double.

Two walks and an error loaded the bases for Fredonia in the top of the sixth inning before Andrew Cowan was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Two more runs scored on wild pitches and the final two scored on an error.

In the Hillbillies’ seventh, Kevin Brown led off with a walk and scored on Andrew Cowan’s RBI triple. Cowan scored the final run on an error.

For Salamanca, Cory Holleran struck out three and walked four in four innings. He also had a pair of RBI triples.
