Fredonia ousts Holland 78-7 in flag football

FREDONIA — A rematch of last season’s Section VI Division 2 crossover game awaits the Fredonia Hillbillies.

Sophomore Emma Perry ran 10 times for 144 yards and five touchdowns as No. 2 Fredonia beat No. 10 Holland 78-7 in a Section VI Class C quarterfinal Monday evening at the Orange Bowl.

“That’s a testament to her as a first-year player, but also as someone who has had that backup role,” Fredonia co-head coach Nick Bertrando said of Perry. “The way she ran was amazing, it was set up by her and her teammates with a collective effort to make sure we created opportunities for open spots to run and for her to do the rest.”

The Hillbillies led 46-0 to clinch their spot in Wednesday’s 7 p.m. semifinal against No. 3 Pioneer. That game will be back at the Orange Bowl as opposed to last season’s crossover game, which took place at Highmark Stadium.

“Pioneer is one of the premier programs in Section VI when it comes to flag football. They execute very, very well, they are stout on defense, they are well coached and they’ve got a lot of electric players,” Bertrando said. “Hopefully it’s a very fun and exciting game on Wednesday night. We’ll see what the weather decides to do. We’re looking forward to playing in front of the home crowd and hopefully using that home field to our advantage.”

Sophia Utegg had 32 yards and two touchdowns, Peyton Krenzer ran for 73 yards and a touchdown, and Natalia DiPalma ran for 38 yards and a score Monday for the Hillbillies.

“It really was just a complete game,” Bertrando said. “We tried to establish ourselves in the air and on the ground on offense. We had a lot of success doing that. We had a lot of people step up.”

Mikaela Sciarrino led the Fredonia defense with five flag pulls and two passes defended. All four of Megan Ivory’s flag pulls were for a loss. Gracia Domenico, Elizabeth Morris and Ivory each had a sack. Madelyn Polhamus had a first-half interception that she returned for a touchdown.

“We knew they had some electric players so we really tried to key in on them. It was nice to see the defense lock everyone down and keep them off the board until the second half,” Bertrando said. “Their quarterback moves very, very well and creates stuff with her feet. Overall our girls did a really nice job of containing her and putting her in some tough spots, which I don’t know if she’d been accustomed to all that much this year.”

Both of Fredonia’s losses last year were to Pioneer — in Week 2 and in the crossover game.
