WEST ELLICOTT — Dunkirk rallied after an early misstep to beat Southwestern/Frewsburg 7-6 in Division 4 flag football at Charles A. Lawson Field on Wednesday evening.

After a rough start in which Dunkirk threw an interception on the very first play of the game — setting up an early 6-0 lead for Southwestern/Frewsburg — it quickly turned into a defensive showdown.

Dunkirk’s defense answered the call, forcing two key turnovers. Denali Lockett and Analiz Rivera each came up with timely interceptions to stall Southwestern/Frewsburg’s momentum.

Offensively, Aniyah Ortiz delivered in the clutch, hauling in three receptions, including a long gain late in the second half that set up Dunkirk deep in scoring territory. Jayla Pacheco capitalized on the opportunity, punching in a rushing touchdown to tie the game at 6-6.

Analiz Rivera caught the ensuing extra-point attempt, giving Dunkirk a 7-6 lead that held through the final whistle

“I was very proud of the way the girls stuck in there and fought hard until the last whistle,” Dunkirk head coach Edwin Gomez said. “The defense played a fantastic game from start to finish forcing turnovers and multiple turnovers on downs. They keep consistently making progress in the right direction and continue to improve day in and day out.”
