Orcutt provides walk-off single

Dunkirk rallies twice; Cosme ‘spot on’

DUNKIRK — Greg Orcutt hit a two-out, walk-off single to score Josh Lemanski as Dunkirk rallied past Allegany-Limestone for a 7-6 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 baseball win Wednesday at Al Stuhlmiller Field.

Lemanski walked with two outs and stole second base in the bottom of the eighth inning. Orcutt’s second hit of the day drove him in with the winning run.

The Gators (4-7, 1-6) led 6-5 going into the bottom of the seventh inning before Henry Leone walked with one out. Danny Hoth was called to run for Leone and stole second base before a wild pitch and a throwing error allowed Hoth to score the tying run.

Anthony Cosme threw 6 1/3 innings for the Marauders (10-1, 6-1), striking out 14 and walking one.

“He was spot on. His breaking ball was really solid tonight,” said Dunkirk head coach Frank Jagoda. “When he got ahead of hitters, he was dominant with his breaking ball.”

Lemanski relieved Cosme and struck out four of the five batters he faced.

Gabe Valentine had two hits and two stolen bases for the Marauders.

Allegany-Limestone took a 5-2 lead with a four-run top of the fifth inning. Caleb Strade had the big hit of the inning when he cleared the bases with a three-run double. Strade finished with two hits and also struck out nine on the mound for the Gators.

PUTNEY TOSSES TWO-HITTER

FREDONIA — Southwestern and Fredonia combined for just five hits as the Hillbillies beat the Trojans 9-4 in Division 1 action.

Fredonia’s Ashton Putney threw a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts and four walks. Just one of the four runs he allowed was earned. Putney finished the game with seven of his final nine outs coming via the strikeout.

“I think he’s getting a little sharper every time he comes out,” said Fredonia (6-4, 4-1) head coach Tim Cowan. “He got his offspeed pitches over more consistently today. That change of speed led to more strikeouts.”

The Trojans (3-4, 3-3) led 1-0 in the top of the first inning as Judd Harris reached on an error, moved to second on a Wilson Genareo sacrifice and scored on a two-out error.

Fredonia took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the frame as Putney and Andrew Cowan walked, each stole a base, and both scored on wild pitches.

The Trojans tied the game in the second when Lucas Genareo walked and Owen Hayes laid down a sacrifice bunt before another two-out error.

Southwestern made it 4-2 in the top of the third inning. Wilson Genareo doubled and George Marshall reached on an error before Cooper Charles laid down a squeeze bunt to plate Genareo. Marshall later scored on a pickoff play.

The Hillbillies took the lead for good with a four-run third inning. Matt Cowan, Andrew Cowan and Brady Crawford walked to load the bases before Colin Luce hit an RBI single. Colin Crowell, AJ Kinney and Brady Helmer then drew full-count walks to make it 6-4.

“Both teams battled, worked a lot of long at-bats and full counts. We were able to take advantage of the few opportunities that we had,” Coach Cowan said. “If the ball wasn’t there, we were patient enough to lay off and grind out a few runs to stretch the lead.”

Putney walked, stole second and third, and scored on a two-out RBI single from Luce in the fourth inning.

In Fredonia’s sixth inning, Putney walked and stole second before scoring on Andrew Cowan’s RBI double. Colin Luce then hit a groundball to first base that resulted in an error allowing Cowan to score.

Cooper Charles and Oscar Harris combined on a three-hitter with 11 walks and six strikeouts for Southwestern.
