Pine Valley provides early scare as Bears clinch title

FREWSBURG — Winless Pine Valley took a 7-2 lead in the top of the second inning, but Frewsburg stormed back with 15 runs in the bottom of the frame and beat the Panthers 21-7 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 baseball Friday at the Frewsburg Sports Complex.

On Senior Day, the Bears clinched the league title as they improved to 13-2 overall and 12-0 in the division.

Maddox Sheesley went 2 for 4 with an inside-the-park home run, two RBIs and three runs scored; Blake Weaver was 3 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored; Chase Haglund was 2 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored; Mason Eckman was 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored; Daniel Peterson was 2 for 3 with a double, four RBIs and four runs scored; and Drake Beckstrom also doubled for Frewsburg.

Camryn Slade, Trent Ivett, Hayden Chase and Cameron Howard each doubled for the Panthers (0-13, 0-12). Slade and Howard each drove in a pair of runs.

WOLFPACK TOPS BROCTON

BROCTON — Gavin Burchanowski tossed a five-inning one-hitter with just two strikeouts as Clymer/Sherman/Panama beat Brocton 12-1 in Division 2 action.

Bryce Hinsdale went 3 for 4 with a double, a triple, four RBIs and three runs scored while Andrew Spiesman was 2 for 4 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored for the Wolfpack (9-4, 9-3).

Michael Garcia’s single to lead off the bottom of the first inning was the lone hit for the Bulldogs (10-5, 8-3).

HERMAN HAS BIG NIGHT

GOWANDA — Blake Herman went 3 for 4, including a bases-clearing third-inning triple, as Gowanda beat North Collins 20-1 in Division 3 action.

Brayden Smith was 2 for 4 with a double, four RBIs and two runs scored; Carson Huch doubled, drove in three runs and scored three times; Seth Geiger was 2 for 4; and Owen Pfaffenbach singled, drove in two runs and scored twice for the Panthers (14-3, 12-1).

Geiger tossed four innings of four-hit ball, striking out six. Logan Ruff got the final three outs, including a strikeout, for Gowanda.

Scott Armbruster doubled while Vince Montaldi, Riley Greene and Jon Rice each had a single for the Eagles (6-9, 5-8).

WOLVERINES ROLL CASSADAGA VALLEY

SINCLAIRVILLE — Mason Baum collected two hits including a triple as Westfield rolled Cassadaga Valley 10-4 in Division 2 action.

Danny Bratton also tripled for Westfield (7-6, 7-5) and Trent Ramm added two hits with a double. Tristen Phillips pitched 12 strikeouts in the win.

Jackson Crowell had 10 strikeouts for Cassadaga Valley (1-10, 1-9).
