Dunkirk, Fredonia move on in respective brackets

DUNKIRK — A year ago the Dunkirk baseball team reached the Section VI Class A final as a No. 7 seed. This year, the Marauders were billed as the No. 3 team in the Class A2 playoffs.

The Marauders certainly lived up to the seeding against No. 6 Albion in the quarterfinals as they secured a 13-0 win in five innings while just giving up one hit.

Senior ace Greg Orcutt allowed the hit and a walk while striking out six batters in his four innings of work.

“Greg was good from the start and in total control,” Dunkirk head coach Frank Jagoda said. “Defensively, Tony Piede made a great catch in right field and Dylan Bankoski made the catch of the game on a deep, deep ball to left-center. Good pitching, good defense and good hitting, what more could you ask for?”

While Orcutt needed very little run support, his teammates still gave it to him with Josh Lemanski leading the charge by going 2 for 4 with a three-run home run. Henry Leone was 3 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs, Gabe Valentine went 2 for 2 with two runs and an RBI, Thomas Shaffer hit a double and picked up two RBIs, and Anthony Cosme added a double.

Dunkirk is back in action with a familiar opponent today at No. 2 Maryvale in the semifinals. Last season, the Flyers defeated the Marauders 9-4 in the sectional final.

PUTNEY NO-HITS NEWFANE

GOWANDA — Ashton Putney was brilliant on the mound again for Fredonia and this time it sent the fourth-seeded Hillbillies past No. 13 Newfane 11-0 in the Class B prequarterfinals.

Putney pitched five innings of no-hit ball with 15 strikeouts to send Fredonia into today’s 5 p.m. quarterfinal against No. 12 Salamanca at Fredonia High School.

Putney struck out the first eight batters he faced before a two-out walk in the third inning. Newfane’s only other base runner came on a two-out walk in the fourth inning.

After Putney struck out the side on 12 pitches in the top of the first inning, the Hillbillies plated a pair of runs. Putney led off with a triple and scored on Matt Cowan’s RBI single. Cowan then stole second and went to third on a wild pitch before Colin Luce’s RBI groundout.

Putney struck out the side on 15 pitches in the top of the second inning before Fredonia put up seven runs in the bottom of the frame. Colin Crowell reached on an infield single before A.J. Kinney and Pauly Tabone walked to load the bases. Putney was then hit by a pitch to force in a run and Matt Cowan hit a two-run single. Luce followed with a single to reload the bases before Andrew Cowan walked to force in a run. Matt Cowan later scored on a wild pitch ahead of RBI groundouts from Luca Gullo and Crowell.

The Hillbillies scored their final two runs in the third inning. Putney was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a Matt Cowan RBI single. After a pair of wild pitches, Colin Luce hit an RBI groundout.
