Putney has 19 Ks in 17-0 victory over Gators

ALLEGANY — Allegany-Limestone hitters must be sick of Ashton Putney.

For the second time in four days, Fredonia’s senior ace dominated the Gators.

On Monday, Putney struck out the first 13 batters of the game and finished with a career-high 19 strikeouts in a 17-0 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 baseball victory.

Putney carried a perfect game into the seventh inning before Vinny LaBella led off with a clean single up the middle. After a strikeout, Putney walked a batter and hit one before striking out the final two batters of the game.

“He’s been as sharp as he’s ever been. They are a good hitting lineup,” Fredonia head coach Tim Cowan said of the Gators (4-10, 1-9). “They’ve pushed everybody in our division. They took their hacks today.”

Allegany-Limestone’s only other balls put in play were an Isaiah Fisher line-drive comebacker to Putney in the fifth inning and a Dylan Rhodes foul pop-up to first base in the sixth inning.

Putney struck out 13 Gators in five innings Friday to bring his two-game total to 32 strikeouts in 12 innings.

The Hillbillies (9-8, 7-3) led 6-0 through six innings Monday before putting the game away with an 11-run seventh inning.

Andrew Cowan walked with two outs in the first inning, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Colin Luce’s RBI single.

In Fredonia’s fourth inning, AJ Kinney and Putney singled ahead of Matt Cowan’s two-run double. Andrew Cowan followed with a single and Luce hit an RBI groundout.

Caleb Strade threw five innings for Allegany-Limestone, allowing four runs while walking four and striking out 11.

The Hillbillies added two runs in the sixth inning. Matt Cowan singled and Andrew Cowan walked before Luce eventually hit a sacrifice fly. Andrew Cowan later scored on a wild pitch.

In the seventh, Pauly Tabone and Kinney hit RBI singles, Matt Cowan and Tabone were hit by pitches to force in runs, Andrew Cowan drew a bases-loaded walk, Brady Crawford hit a two-run double, Putney hit a two-run single and three runs scored on wild pitches.

Fredonia will close nonleague regular-season play tonight at 5 p.m. when it hosts Lake Shore and honors its seven seniors.

THREE COMBINE FOR SHUTOUT

DUNKIRK — Thomas Shaffer, Josh Smith and Danny Hoth combined on a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts and eight walks as Dunkirk shut out Eden 12-0 in nonleague play.

Josh Lemanski had three hits, including a double, and drove in four runs while Paul Trippy also had three hits as the Marauders () pounded out a total of 14 hits in the game.

Alex Biscaro, Henry Leone and Anthony Cosme each added a pair of hits in the win.

“We hit the ball hard all day,” Dunkirk head coach Frank Jagoda said, “and caught some breaks late in the game.”

Left fielder Henry Leone made a running catch to preserve the shutout.

The Marauders put the game away with an eight-run sixth inning.

BEARS RALLY PAST WOLFPACK

CLYMER — Trailing 2-0, Frewsburg scored two runs in the fifth inning and three more in the seventh to rally past Clymer/Sherman/Panama for a 5-2 victory in Division 2.

The win allowed the Bears to complete a perfect 14-0 league season and raise their overall record to 15-2.

Tied 2-2 entering the top of the seventh inning, Chase Haglund led off with a single and Mason Eckman followed with a go-ahead RBI double. After a groundout, Eckman scored on Daniel Peterson’s RBI fielder’s choice. With two outs, Peterson stole second, went to third on an error and scored when Cole Mazzurco reached on an error.

Aidan Gruber earned the win on the mound for Frewsburg, allowing three hits and two unearned runs while striking out 14 and walking one.

Gruber finished with a pair of singles and Maddox Sheesley doubled, drove in a run and scored a run for the Bears.

The Wolfpack (10-5, 10-4) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Gavin Burchanowski and Tate Catanese scored on two-out errors.

Bryce Hinsdale took the loss, tossing six innings of six-hit ball while allowing four runs. He struck out four and walked six.

JAUSS EARNS 2 WINS

MAYVILLE — Chautauqua Lake hosted Cassadaga Valley to a Division 2 doubleheader and Nathan Jauss managed to pick up a pair of wins on the mound for the Eagles. In Game 1, Jauss and the Eagles won 10-0 in five innings and followed that up with a 13-5 victory in Game 2 which lasted 5 2/3 innings as the Cougars ran out of pitchers.

In Game 1, Jauss went all five innings and gave up just two hits and struck out five securing the win.

Offensive support by the Eagles came from Devin Hewes with a pair of hits including a double and 3 RBIs. Clay Smith also had two hits in the victory.

Cassadaga Valley received a double from Logan Hayward and a triple by Grant Zahm.

In Game 2, Jauss went 3 innings with three strikeouts, two walks, two hits and one run.

Then it was Hewes again stepping up with three hits including a double and home run with 4 RBIs for Chautauqua Lake (8-9, 7-7). Smith, Jauss and Cayden Blackman added two hits each.

Cassadaga Valley (1-13, 1-12) received another two hits from Hayward.

HERMAN HOMERS AGAIN

GOWANDA — Blake Herman hit a two-run inside-the-park home run as Gowanda beat North Collins 3-0 in Division 3.

Kyan Austin, Logan Ruff and Noah Lauer combined on a seven-hit shutout with five strikeouts and two walks for the Panthers (16-3, 13-1).

Herman went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Carter Capozzi drove in the third Gowanda run with a fifth-inning groundout.

Walter Ebersole and Angelo Fera each had a pair of hits for the Eagles (6-10, 5-9). Ebersole tossed a five-hitter, allowing three runs (two earned) while striking out three and walking four.

TAYLOR STYMIES EAGLES

RANDOLPH — Aiden Taylor threw a four-hit shutout and Randolph beat Ellicottville 4-0 in Division 3.

Taylor needed 92 pitches and struck out seven. He allowed a pair of singles to Carson Mendell in addition to singles by Sawyer Miller and Parker John.

Wyatt Weaver singled and drove in a pair of runs for the Cardinals (7-9, 6-8). David Malone singled twice, Connor Braley homered; and Maverick Schmeltz doubled and scored a run.

Rylan Benjamin allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits and struck out nine while walking three for the Eagles (6-11, 3-10).
