Section VI track & field teams square off throughout Western NY

ALDEN — Mariella Russo had herself quite an evening at the Section VI Class B Track & Field Championships at Alden High School on Friday.

The Fredonia junior was a member of the winning 1,600-meter relay; placed second in the 400-meter hurdles and was fifth in the high jump to help the Lady Hillbillies to a fourth-place team finish. The girls collected 54.50 points, which placed them behind East Aurora (193), Springville-Griffith Institute (106) and Depew (56.50) in the 12-team field.

Russo’s teammates in the relay were Charis LaBarr, Cecilia Tonelli and Delaney Kaiser. Together, their winning time was 4 minutes, 13.45 seconds. In her other top-five finishes, Russo posted a time of 1:11.46 in the 400-meter hurdles and had a leap of 4 feet, 8 inches in the high jump.

Also finishing in the top five in their individual events was Alessandra Bugaj, who was second in the triple jump (35-3), and the 3,200-meter relay team of Allison Hellwig, Madelyn Krakowiak, Haley Zadzilka and Anita Uberti, which placed fifth (12:00.55).

For the boys, the Hillbillies’ finished with 18 points. Depew was first with 96, followed by Alden (80.75), East Aurora (80), Albion (67.75) and Health Science (56) in the 13-team field.

CLASS C

FALCONER — Sparked by Emma Lewis, the Southwestern girls rolled to the Section VI Class C title with 152 points at Bill Race Field at Falconer High School.

Tapestry Charter was second with 58 points, followed by Allegany-Limestone (51), Chautauqua Lake (47.5), Silver Creek (43) and Salamanca (40). The other area team, host Falconer, finished 11th with 18 points in the 15-team field.

Individually, Lewis won the 2,000-meter steeplechase (7:10.73), the 400-meter hurdles (1:06.32) and the 3,000 meters (10:55.80).

Other first-place finishers for the Trojans were Marlana Cresanti in the 400 meters (58.03) and the 200 meters (26.17); M’Kenzie Zavala in the 100-meter hurdles (16.60); and Mikayla Johnson in the shot put (39-9.50).

Other area girls winners were Leah Mays of Silver Creek in the 1,500 meters (5:09.20); and Jada Cole of Chautauqua Lake in the high jump (5-5);

In the boys meet, Tapestry Charter was the winner with 120 points, followed by Southwestern (98.5), Newfane (55), Roy-Hart (54.5), Allegany-Limestone (54), Falconer (48), Cleveland Hill (39), Silver Creek (38), Chautauqua Lake (19), Eden (15), Portville (10), Salamanca (4), JFK (2) and Akron (1).

First-place finishers for Southwestern were Donavin Brown in the 1,600 meters (4:41.61); Ryan Ohl in the 400 meters (50.11); Connor Young in the long jump (22-1.5); and Leo Kavic in the shot put (50-2.25);

Other winners among area boys teams were Nathan Bailey of Falconer in the pole vault (12-9); Nathan Mays of Silver Creek in the high jump (5-10); and Walter Lukasiak of Chautauqua Lake in the discus (152-9);
