9 local softball players named to all-state teams by NYSSCOGS

Nine local girls received high praise Monday when they were named to the 36th annual all-state softball teams presented by the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports.

Leading the way were the Fredonia Hillbillies, who had a pair of girls honored in Class B.

Fredonia senior pitcher Danielle Palisin was named to the first team. The left-hander pitched to an earned run average of 1.17, striking out 115 batters in 125 2/3 innings while giving up 87 hits, 20 walks and 21 earned runs. At the plate, Palisin hit .540 with seven doubles and a triple. She scored a team-high 33 runs.

Hillbillies freshman third baseman/outfielder Jenna Fryberger was named to the third team. She hit .443 with three doubles, four triples and a home run while scoring 10 runs.

In Class C, Gowanda junior Addison Kota was named to the first team and Chautauqua Lake senior Cayzlee Johnson was named to the second team.

Kota, who primarily pitched and played shortstop for the Panthers, hit .610 with eight doubles, two triples and 11 home runs while driving in 23 runs and scoring 40. In the circle, the right-hander started nine games and went 5-3 with a 1.91 ERA while striking out 83 in 55 innings.

Johnson, who was the Eagles’ No. 1 pitcher, started 16 games and pitched to a 0.39 ERA with 143 strikeouts in 95 innings. The right-hander allowed just 41 hits and five earned runs. At the plate, Johnson hit .471 with three doubles, three triples and a home run while driving in 18 runs and scoring 22.

Five local girls were named to Class D all-state teams, two from Forestville, two from Ellicottville and one from Clymer/Sherman.

For the Hornets, senior pitcher Megan Gruber was named to the first team and junior shortstop Carilene Sliwa was named to the third team.

Gruber started all 18 games and threw every one of the Hornets’ 1,768 pitches this season. She finished 14-4 with a 1.54 ERA, striking out 156 batters in 122 2/3 innings. At the plate, Gruber hit .370 with six doubles and a triple, driving in 14 runs and scoring 21. Sliwa hit .348 with six doubles, a triple and a home run while driving in six runs and scoring 25.

For the Eagles, junior shortstop Ande Northrup was named to the second team and senior first baseman Courtney Marsh was named to the third team.

Northrup hit .537 with four doubles while scoring 29 runs. Marsh hit .449 with two doubles, a triple and five home runs while scoring 16 runs.

Junior pitcher Elli Bodamer was named to the fourth team for the Wolves. The right-hander threw every one of Clymer/Sherman’s 1,442 pitches this spring, going 10-4 with a 0.78 ERA. She struck out 135 in 90 innings while allowing just 57 hits and 10 earned runs. At the plate, Bodamer hit .435 with three doubles while driving in 17 runs and scoring 10.

Lancaster junior pitcher Alyssa Brunner and junior catcher Brennah DeWald were named co-Players of the Year in Class AAA after the Legends won a state title. Lancaster’s Rich Winiatowski was also named the Coach of the Year.

In Class AA, Orchard Park’s Brittany Schermerhorn was named the Coach of the Year after the Quakers won the state title.

Orchard Park junior center fielder Lainey Babich and Niagara Wheatfield senior pitcher Brooke Bodewes were named to the Class AA first team, Orchard Park senior pitcher Ava Farina, Frontier sophomore pitcher Maddie Ciminelli and Orchard Park senior catcher Ella Sheehan were named to the second team, Frontier senior outfielder Julia Ford was named to the third team, and Williamsville East senior shortstop Abby Wesolowski was named to the fourth team.

In Class A, Williamsville South senior pitcher Alyssa Budzinski and senior second baseman Olivia Sackel were named to the first team, Grand Island senior pitcher Natalie Kopf was named to the second team, Williamsville South junior shortstop Noelle Jurkowski was named to the third team, Lake Shore senior third baseman Jordan Colvin was named to the fourth team and Nardin sophomore catcher Madison Scarpace was named to the fifth team.

Alden senior pitcher Lily Bromstead was named to the second team and Springville junior third baseman Grace Ricci was named to the fourth team in Class B.

St. Mary’s senior third baseman Lauren Payne and senior shortstop Ella Dovey were named to the second team while Barker freshman pitcher Madyson Flint was named to the fourth team in Class C.

State Players of the Year included: Section XI Smithtown West’s Erin McDaid in Class AA, Section XI Miller Place’s Ava Zicchinelli in Class A, Section II Chatham’s Skylar Groom in Class B, Section V Bloomfield’s Ashlyn Wright in Class C and Section III Hamilton’s Ellie Freeth in Class D.

State Coaches of the Year included: Miller Place’s Matthew Timmons in Class A, Chatham’s John Brantley in Class B, Bloomfield’s Mark Jacobs in Class C, and Hamilton’s Zac Darrow and Jessie Darrow in Class D.
