Calph makes ace during Travel League play

UNION CITY, Pa. — Robert Calph and Josh Hilliker both had historic rounds during this week’s Wednesday Travel League event at Union City Country Club.

Calph recorded his first career hole-in-one, acing the 140-yard No. 4 with a 9-iron. It was just the sixth hole-in-one in league history. Calph now has four career eagles in league play, second most in league history. Witnesses to Calph’s ace were Frank Benamati, Bob Kujawa and Dave Wallace.

Hilliker shot a new league course record of 70, breaking the old mark of 77, held by Kerry Murphy. Hilliker recorded seven birdies en route to his league high fifth tour victory of the season. Hilliker and Calph led the front nine with 39s. Hilliker led the back nine with an eye-popping 31, with six birdies, including four consecutive (on Nos. 15-18) to finish his record round.

Calph finished in second place with 85 and Ed Tofil was third with 86. In the B Flight, John Waterman won on a tiebreaker with Jeff Marsowicz. Phil Hopkins was the C Flight winner. 12-year-old Carter Crabtree, grandson of Tom Sacilowski and playing as an amateur, shot 90 to finish in sixth place overall. The low round by a senior was recorded by Jack Hood. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioners Award was Bob Kujawa.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Hilliker (Nos. 2, 10, 13, 15, 16, 17 and 18), Calph (No. 4, ace) and Ken Kaus (No. 14); B Flight — Waterman (No. 1), Wallace (No. 2), Sacilowski (Nos. 6, 14), Tom Destro (No. 9), Ron Szach (No. 13) and Marsowicz (No. 17); C Flight — Aidan Hilliker (Nos. 1, 18), Bob Thompson (Nos. 5, 10), Bob Kujawa (No. 8) and Don Kujawa (Nos. 12 and 17).

Closest to the pin were: Calph (No. 4, ace), Sacilowski (No. 8), Kaus (No. 12) and Tofil (No. 14). Winners of the Steeplechase were: Josh Hilliker (A Flight), Szach (B) and Thompson (C).

Top point winners were: Calph (132, league season high), Josh Hilliker (72) and Sacilowski (24). Season points leaders (through 11 events): 1. Josh Hilliker (219), 2. Calph (203), 3. Tofil (192), 4. Superlatives this week: Calph became just the fifth golfer in league history to reach 4,000 career points. Kaus passed Paul Olkowski for 16th place on the All-Time Points list. Josh Hilliker passed Destro, Leszkowicz and Kerry Murphy and is now 18th on the All-Time Points list.

This week the league plays Maplehurst Country Club in Lakewood. The first tee time is at 9:30.
