Calph shoots 79 at Maplehurst Country Club
LAKEWOOD — Robert Calph shot the low round of 79 at Maplehurst Country Club for his second Wednesday Travel League victory of the season.
Tom Destro and Josh Hilliker tied for second place with 81s. Destro and Hilliker led the front nine with 38s and Jeff Nelson led the back nine with 38 (even with a triple-bogey).
In the B Flight, Joe Michalski won after a tiebreaker with John Waterman. In the C Flight, Dave Franklin won after a tiebreaker with Dennis Gawronski Sr.
The low round by a senior was recorded by Ron Szach. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Aidan Hilliker.
Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Jim Michalski (No. 1), Ken Kaus (No. 3), Josh Hilliker (No. 5), Calph (No. 10), Nelson (No. 12) and Jeff Marsowicz (No. 16); B Flight — Bob Kujawa (No. 4), Tony Destro (Nos. 5 and 17), Szach (No. 7), Joe Bifaro (No. 13) and Waterman (No. 18); C Flight — Tom Sacilowski (Nos. 11, 14 and 16), Gary Hazelton (No. 12) and Tim Walawender (No. 17).
Closest to the pin were: Kaus (No. 3), Ed Tofil (No. 7), Bifaro (No. 13) and Marsowicz (No. 16). Winners of the Steeplechase were Calph (A Flight), Szach (B) and Gawronski (C).
Ron Szach became just the 13th golfer in league history to reach 3,000 career points. Bob Kujawa shot a personal best in league play.

This week the league makes its annual Ohio trip. This year’s courses are Pine Lakes Golf Club in Hubbard on Tuesday and Knoll Run Golf Course in Lowellville on Wednesday. At this time, all spots are filled.
Golfers can sign up for the following Wednesday, July 23 at Rose Brook Golf Course. The deadline is noon, Monday, July 21.
