Military heroes honored with fishing day at Dunkirk Harbor

One of the hardest parts of post-service life for many military veterans is the loss of the close-knit bonds formed during military duty. Thanks to the collaboration between Dream Catcher Sportfishing and WNY Heroes, LLC, a shining example of how a local business and nonprofit company can unite with a team of volunteers to uplift and empower the local veteran community.

On Friday, June 27, they provided an all-day Lake Erie Fishing Trip Experience that allowed veterans to remember that they are not forgotten and that their community stands behind them.

Enormous Gratitude to Captain Jim Steel, Diane Steel, the Dream Catcher Sportfishing Team, the WNY Heroes, 33 boat captains, and the 8-person serving line volunteers for their generous sponsorship of an unforgettable fishing day on Lake Erie for over 80 veterans, including myself.

The event was unique in its offerings, from the opening moment that included the Pledge of Allegiance and invocation by Pastor Jeff Bartz, to the free (no fees accepted) fishing trip donated by the boat captains and the free expert fish-cleaning by the NYSDEC fisheries station biologists. The celebration luncheon at the Clarion Hotel Pavilion was a perfect conclusion to a day filled with support, generosity, and respect from this dedicated team of volunteers. You provided military veterans from several eras of protecting our freedom a chance to relax, connect, and enjoy the healing power of the inland Lake Erie sea, all with a gracious heart just a few days before July 4, Independence Day.

The fishing trip was more than just a day on the water. It was a chance for veterans to reconnect with their fellow service members and form new friendships with others who understand their experiences. Shared time on the water always helps rebuild a sense of belonging and brotherhood/sisterhood. This event, which provided a fun-filled day of sharing time, gratitude, respect, and recognition for commitment and bravery abroad, was an endorsement of the strong local community that supports our veterans. As a Vietnam-era service member, I recall coming home to be disrespected from the airport to the local food eateries. It was a negative time for military veterans.

Spending time on the water offered veterans a peaceful and healing environment. The act of fishing, a proven stress-reliever, was further enhanced by the calm and rhythmic nature of fishing with the walleye professionals on Lake Erie. This entire day was a therapeutic experience. The healing power of nature and the support of the community is powerful.

Like our American Legion Post 362 in East Aurora and every American Legion Post, organizations and events like this help spotlight the needs of veterans and the importance of continued support with simple community involvement. This event raises awareness for others in the public eye to become aware of the work that organizations like WNY Heroes LLC are doing year-round.

Dream Catcher Sportfishing, led by Jim and Diane Steel, is renowned not only for delivering exceptional experiences on Lake Erie but also for its strong ties to the community. This June 27 event was more than just a fishing trip; it was a heartfelt thank-you and a lifeline for those who’ve served. It was a day of healing, connection, and hope. To all the volunteer members of the sponsor team, I want to express my deepest gratitude for honoring the military service of veterans in such a meaningful way. The walleye filets I took home were a delicious reminder of the day, and they were enjoyed by 10 people with lots of ‘oohs’ and ‘ahs.’ Thank you!
