Tarp Skunks outdone by Newark 14-12

NEWARK — The Jamestown Tarp Skunks scored a dozen runs and hit a season-high three home runs, but their pitching staff didn’t do its job in a 14-12 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League loss to the Newark Pilots on Tuesday evening at Colburn Park.

The Pilots jumped out to a 5-0 lead on Tarp Skunks starter Easton Barnett, who lasted just one inning and allowed five runs (three earned) on three hits and two walks.

Jamestown got a run back in the top of the second inning and then took a 6-5 lead with a five-run top of the third inning.

But Newark answered with a three-run bottom of the third inning to take an 8-6 lead. Sam Rickman, the Tarp Skunks’ second pitcher, lasted 1 1/3 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits and three walks while striking out two.

The Tarp Skunks again took the lead with a four-run top of the fourth inning. Jakob Haynes hit a solo home run and Brady McGuire added a three-run shot later in the inning to make it 10-8.

Ben Slanker added a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to make it 11-8 as Daniel Thomas steadied things on the mound for Jamestown with 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out two.

But Newark took a 13-12 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning off Jasean Brown, the Tarp Skunks’ fourth pitcher of the night, who allowed five runs on three hits and two walks. The big hits of the inning for the Pilots were Christian Butera’s two-run single and Jacob Poletto’s two-run triple. Poletto later scored on a wild pitch.

Slanker went 2 for 4 with an RBI and three runs scored while Brady Marshall was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and a run scored.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for Jamestown, which has won 11 of its last 13 games overall. The second-place Tarp Skunks are now 21-12 overall, 1 1/2 games behind West Division-leading Batavia.

Jamestown returns to action at 6:30 p.m. today for the start of a home-and-home series at Niagara Falls. The Tarp Skunks return to Diethrick Park on Thursday for a 6:30 p.m. game against the Americans.
