Tarp Skunks settle for No. 2 seed
Jamestown falls to Batavia 4-1 on final day of regular season
BATAVIA — The Jamestown Tarp Skunks entered the weekend controlling their own destiny in pursuit of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League’s West Division title.
They came up one win short of that goal Sunday afternoon.
Eric Woodley threw eight innings of four-hit ball and Jacob Veczko went 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs as the Batavia Muckdogs clinched the division crown with a 4-1 win over Jamestown on Sunday afternoon at Dwyer Stadium.
The Muckdogs improved to 31-13-1 with the victory to earn the West Division’s No. 1 seed heading into this week’s postseason. At 29-14, the Tarp Skunks settled for the No. 2 seed and a Tuesday playoff game against No. 3 Niagara Falls (30-16). First pitch for that divisional semifinal will take place at 6:30 p.m. at Diethrick Park.
Batavia will host the fourth-seeded Auburn Doubledays (25-14-5) in Tuesday’s other divisional semifinal. Winners of Tuesday’s games will meet Wednesday in a one-game divisional final at the site of the higher seed.
The Muckdogs jumped on Jamestown starting pitcher Easton Barnett for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first Sunday. Tyler Castratar walked with one out, took second on a wild pitch, and scored on an Omar Carreras RBI single. After Cooper Fesh was hit by a pitch, Veczko hit an RBI single.
Nobody scored again until Batavia’s half of the eighth inning. Brayden Horton led off with a single to chase Jamestown reliever Daniel Thomas from the game. With one out, Carreras singled before Veczko’s two-run double.
The Tarp Skunks put up a fight in the top of the ninth inning. Nolan Smith and Ben Slanker reached on back-to-back walks to open the frame, spelling the end of the afternoon for Woodley.
Luc Rising relieved and gave up a single to Jakob Haynes to load the bases. Justin Bremner hit a sacrifice fly to plate Jamestown’s lone run of the game, but Nathan Borchardt popped out and Blake Herman grounded out to end the game.
Barnett went five innings, allowing four hits, two runs and a walk while striking out six. Thomas allowed two hits, a run and two walks in his two innings of work. Jasean Brown got the final three outs, allowing two hits and a run while striking out one.
