Hilliker paces Wed. Travel League at Downing Golf Course; Calph wins major
HARBORCREEK, Pa. — The Wednesday Travel League played a wet, rainy event at Downing Golf Course.
Josh Hilliker broke his own league course record of 72 by one stroke, shooting a 1-under par 71. He earned his 55th career tour victory with the low round in the league this season. Robert Calph finished second with 77 and Ed Tofil was third with 81. Hilliker led both the front (36) and back (35) nines. Calph made par on all nine holes on the back nine for a 36.
Tom Sacilowski was the B Flight winner. In the C Flight, Pat Weaver won on the second tiebreaker hole over Tom Destro. The low round by a senior was shot by Jack Hood. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Joe Bifaro.
Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Hilliker (Nos. 1, 6, 10 and 13), Tofil (Nos. 3 and 7), and Calph (Nos. 4 and 12); B Flight — Pete Pinkoski (No. 1), Sacilowski (No. 4), Jeff Marsowicz (No. 5), Ron Szach (No. 16) and Carter Crabtree (No. 18); C Flight — Destro (Nos. 1 and 14), Frank Benamati (No. 5), Ryan Tofil (Nos. 7, 10 and 12), Bob Kujawa (No. 17) and Gary Haase (No. 18).
Closest to the pin were: Jim Ellman Sr. (No. 5), Calph (No. 8), Dennis Gawronski Sr. (No. 11), and Phil Hopkins (No. 15). Winners of the Steeplechase were: Hilliker (A Flight), Dave Franklin (B) and Weaver (C).

BRADFORD, Pa. — The Wednesday Travel League held its fourth major of the season, “The Frank Borowski Invitational,” in honor of its league founder, at Pennhills Club.
Robert Calph was the overall winner, posting the low round of 77, becoming just the second league golfer (Tony Nicosia) to win 10 majors. Ed Tofil finished second with 79 and Josh Hilliker was third with 81. Tofil led the front nine with 39. Calph and Hilliker led the back nine with 37s. The victory marked Calph’s second Frank Borowski Invitational title and also his second major victory of the season.
Tim Walawender was the B Flight champion. In the C Flight, a three-way tiebreaker gave Ken Kaus the title over Pat Weaver and Ron Szach — who also shot the low round by a senior. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Joe Bifaro.
For the second straight week, Tom Sacilowski finished in a tie with his 12-year-old grandson Carter Crabtree. After losing on a tiebreaker last week, Crabtree evened the score this week, defeating his grandfather on the first tiebreaker hole and finishing an impressive 13th place overall.
