JAMESTOWN — Several defensive miscues cost Jamestown as the host team lost its first game of the Babe Ruth 13-Year-Old World Series 5-2 to Centennial, Colorado on Saturday night at Diethrick Park.

The Midwest Plains Region champions only scored in two innings, but that was enough for them to win their first game of pool play.

Centennial’s Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game, Kian Trebelhorn, doubled and scored twice while also providing flawless play at shortstop.

The boys from Colorado jumped on Jamestown with a three-run bottom of the first inning. Trebelhorn doubled with one out and scored when Edward Fox reached on an error. Max Comeaux then singled Fox to third base before stealing second. James Mungee followed with an RBI single and Comeaux later scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.

Jamestown got on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning. Josh Cowan led off with a single and James Oakes followed with a single to move Cowan to third. After Oakes stole second, Logan Simpson drew a one-out walk to load the bases. Luca Mistretta then hit a groundball that scored Cowan, but an out on the basepaths ended the inning.

Jamestown pulled to within a run in the top of the fifth inning when Brayden Crawford singled, went all the way to third on an errant pickoff throw, and scored on Oakes’ RBI groundout.

But Centennial put the game away with a two-run fifth inning of its own. After back-to-back singles from Davel Whittal and Cal Williams to open the frame, Trebelhorn reached on a fielder’s choice that resulted in a run on a Jamestown error. Later, with Trebelhorn on third and Comeaux on first after a two-out walk, the two executed a double-steal to plate Centennial’s fifth run.

Two pitchers allowed the five runs to be enough. Fox started and threw four innings, allowing two hits and a run while striking out three and walking four. Mason Mayer got the three-inning save for Centennial, allowing two hits and a run while striking out two and walking one.

Jacob Piazza, the Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game for Jamestown, started and allowed three runs in four innings while striking out five. He gave up three hits and walked two. Mistretta and Owen Parinella each threw an inning of relief.

Starting at $3.50/week.
