Wallace wins ‘U.S. Open’ in Wednesday Travel League

RUSSELL, Pa. — The Wednesday Travel League held the third leg of its grand slam, “The U.S. Open” at Cable Hollow Golf Course.

Dave Wallace was the overall winner after a second-hole tiebreaker with Robert Calph, both having tied for the low score with 78s. Ed Tofil finished third, a stroke back with 79. It was Wallace’s second U.S. Open title (2022). Jeff Nelson led the front nine with 38 and Wallace led the back nine with 37.

Tom Sacilowski and Ron Szach won the B and C flights, respectively. The low round by a senior was shot by Joe Tramuta. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Jaime Galarza.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Phil Hopkins (No. 2), Tofil (No. 8), Tramuta (No. 11), Nelson (No. 12) and Mick Dunning Sr. (No. 17); B Flight — Don Kujawa (Nos. 1 and 10), Jack Hood (No. 6), Bob Kujawa (Nos. 9 and 11), Dave Franklin (No. 13), Sacilowski (No. 16) and John Waterman (No. 18); C Flight — Pat Weaver (No. 1), Frank Benamati (Nos. 2 and 4), Szach (Nos. 7 and 16) and Tim Walawender (No. 13).

Closest to the pin were: Hopkins (No. 2), Sacilowski (No. 5), Tramuta (No. 11), Nelson (No. 13) and Dunning (No. 17). Winners of the Steeplechase were: Calph (A Flight), Lenny Leszkowicz (B) and Mike Willoughby (C). Winners of the par-3 contest were Nelson (A, 1-over), Bob Kujawa (B, even) and Walawender (C, 3-over).
