Runners compete at McQuaid Invitational

ROCHESTER — At around 7,000 runners strong, the 60th annual McQuaid Invitational was billed as the nation’s largest high school-sponsored cross-county meet.

Emma Lewis felt quite comfortable on that big stage Saturday.

Competing in the Girls Varsity A-1 race (Small School Division), the Southwestern junior posted a time of 17:29.1 on the 3-mile course to easily outlast freshman Ellie Roberts of South Jefferson (18:12.2), who placed second.

Lewis’ individual victory, which helped the Trojans to a sixth-place team finish, was the best among local girls.

Among the area boys, Maple Grove senior Ethan Verbosky turned in the top time, finishing second in the Boys Varsity A-2 (Small School Division) race with a time of 15:24.9, about 17 seconds behind winner Ibrahim Ford of Arkport-Canaseraga (15:07.3). As a team, the Red Dragons placed second with 129 points.

In the Girls Varsity A-2 race, local individual finishers inside the top 75 included: Clymer/Sherman/Panama’s Savannah Whitney (13th, 19:37.2); Clymer/Sherman/Panama’s Grace Cooke (18th, 19:50.3); Frewsburg’s Jadyn Trocki (30th, 20:44.1); Maple Grove’s Mae Benedetto (45th, 21:22.1); Maple Grove’s Lily Elliss (51st, 21:20); Frewsburg’s Raegan Cheney (60th, 21:29.4); Frewsburg’s Grace Gilevski (63rd, 21:36.1); and Clymer/Sherman/Panama’s Riley Johnson (72nd, 21:48.9).

Clymer/Sherman/Panama’s girls were sixth as a team with 246 points, followed by eighth-place Maple Grove (311), 12th-place Frewsburg (345), 27th-place Falconer/Cassadaga Valley (667), 29th-place Franklinville/Ellicottville (723) and 30th-place Gowanda (762).

In the Girls Varsity A-1 race, local individual finishers inside the top 75 included: Fredonia/Westfield’s Izzie Czekanski (15th, 19:19.7), Southwestern’s Lillian Weikel (54th, 20:33.6) and Southwestern’s Kenzi Swafford (69th, 21:03.9).

Fredonia/Westfield was 13th with 418 points.

In the Girls Varsity AA race, Dunkirk/Silver Creek/Forestville’s Hanan Mohamad Narvaez was 20th in 19:38.2. Her team was 13th with 397 points and Randolph was 30th with 753 points.

Jamestown was 22nd in the Bob Bradley Premier for Girls race with 572 points.

In the Bob Bradley Premier for Boys race, Jamestown’s Clevon Wofford was 42nd in 15:56.40 to help his team to a 21st-place finish with 447 points.

The top local individual finisher in the Boys Varsity A-2 race was 11th-place Grant Cornell of Franklinville/Ellicottville in 16:00.1. Clymer/Sherman/Panama’s Christopher Phelps was 17th in 16:14.3, followed by Maple Grove’s Ty Kraft (24th, 16:40.3), Clymer/Sherman/Panama’s Finn Fadale (31st, 16:51.1), Maple Grove’s Jacob Lewis (41st, 16:56.7), Maple Grove’s Owen Erlandson (43rd, 16:57.8), Maple Grove’s Jack Sherry (45th, 16:58.5), Clymer/Sherman/Panama’s Flynn Fadale (57th, 17:13.9) and Maple Grove’s Liam Price (69th, 17:37.8).

Clymer/Sherman/Panama was seventh as a team with 266 points and Franklinville/Ellicottville was 20th (566).

Fredonia/Westfield’s Trenton Krenzer took 41st in the Boys Varsity A-1 race in 16:55.2, followed by teammates James Fagan in 53rd (17:15.1) and Alexander Cramer in 69th (17:41.1).

Fredonia/Westfield was seventh as a team with 324 points and Southwestern was 25th (722).

Randolph’s Rhys Kelly was 75th in the Boys Varsity AA race with a time of 17:24.4. Silver Creek/Dunkirk/Forestville was 34th as a team with 931 points.
