Trojans, Hillbillies post Week 1 wins
CHEEKTOWAGA — Jake Burkholder needed just three words to describe Southwestern/Frewsburg’s season-opening nonleague football game.
“It was fun,” the Trojans’ head coach said Saturday.
That’s understandable.
Southwestern/Frewsburg rushed for almost 350 yards, passed for more than 100 and its defense allowed only a first-quarter touchdown en route to a dominant 58-6 victory over Cleveland Hill.
“We were just able to spread the ball around,” Burkholder said. “Four different kids got touchdowns today, the defense played well and we settled in nicely. It was just a team effort.”
The statistics prove that.
Bradyn Fuller rushed for 161 yards and scored three touchdowns; Trent Lewis added 108 yards on the ground and found the end zone twice, and connected on TD passes of 12 and 45 yards to Joey Sirianni; and Miles Torres collected 66 yards rushing.
Southwestern/Frewsburg was clicking offensively right from the start as it scored on its first two offensive plays of the game — Fuller’s 65-yard run and Lewis’ 26-yard scamper — which staked it to a 14-6 lead. By the end of the first quarter, the Trojans’ led 28-6, a margin that grew to 49-6 by halftime.
Lewis finished 4 of 7 passing for 118 yards and three touchdowns, the third scoring connection to George Marshall from 14 yards out. Oscar Harris connected on all eight point-after kicks; and Carter Casselman was credited with a safety in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.
Defensively, Southwestern/Frewsburg was led by Roger Markham (two interceptions, one tackle for loss); Zach Markham (five tackles, fumble recovery); Jason Edwards (three tackles); and Brayden Potter (two tackles for loss).
The Trojans return to action this Friday when they travel to Fredonia.
