Wednesday Travel League plays at Shorewood
The Wednesday Travel League held its 11th annual “Commissioner’s Cup” at Shorewood Country Club.
The event honors the memory of past league commissioner, Bruce “Java” Chrabasz. Golfers wore orange, brown, and white, the colors of Java’s favorite team, the Cleveland Browns.
Katie Michalak was the overall winner of the coveted Commissioner’s Cup. She is the seventh different golfer to capture the Cup. Flight winners were Josh Hilliker (A), Rich Hofer (B), Dave Franklin (C) and Frank Issler (D). The low round by a senior was shot by Ron Szach. Michalak also won the weekly Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award.
Before the awards presentation at the Dunkirk Falcon Club, a moment of silence was held for both Java and Jack Schrantz, a three-time winner of the Commissioner’s Cup.
Josh Hilliker shot the low score of 79, followed by Connor Farnham with 81, and Joe Michalski and Tom Tarnowski with 84s. Farnham led the front nine with 38 while Hilliker led the back nine with 39.
Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight, Farnham (No. 2), Robert Calph (No. 7), Hilliker (No. 11), Adam Gornikiewicz (No. 12), Kevin Jasinski (No. 14), and Frank Jagoda (No. 17); B Flight, Pete Pinkoski (No.1), Tim Siragusa (No. 4), Jason Habich (No. 15) and Phil Maslak (No. 16); C Flight, Marty Klemann (No. 2), Tom Destro (No. 5), Gary Richardson (No. 8) and Tim Walawender (No.17); and D Flight, Bill Lanski (No. 2), Dan Kaszuba (No. 3), Jim Ellman Sr. (No. 4) Jeff Marsowicz (No. 9) and Bob Dimmer (No. 12).
Closest to the pin were Siragusa (No. 4), Michalski (No. 6), Habich (No. 15) and Kaszuba (No. 17). Winners of the steeplechase were Hilliker (A Flight), Szach (B), Dennis Gawronski Sr. (C) and Marsowicz (D). Winners of the par-3 contest were Pat Weaver (A Flight), Danny Kubera (B), Franklin (C) and Ellman (D).
In the special Cleveland Browns logo ball contest, with a score of 84, was the team of Tarnowski, Hofer, Jerry Reilly and Dimmer. The last-place team of Weaver, Gornikiewicz, John Waterman and Destro were eliminated on their very first swing, losing the ball in the left woods of No. 11.
Top point winners were Siragusa and Habich (66 apiece), Ellman (55), Jagoda (44) and Kaszuba (33). Season points leaders (through 21 events) are: 1.Hilliker (527), 2. Ed Tofil (434), 3. Franklin (355), 4. Calph (336), 5. Waterman (293), 6. Tom Sacilowski (291), 7. Lenny Leszkowicz (217), 8. Phil Hopkins (197), 9. Bob Kujawa (186) and 10. Jeff Nelson (185). Dave Franklin became just the third golfer in league history to reach 4,500 career points.

This week the league will play Whispering Pines in Meadville, Pennsylvania. There will be a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start. Limited openings exist and golfers are asked to inquire by 8 p.m. Sunday.
