Capozzi connects with Austin on final play as Panthers stun Randolph 28-22

GOWANDA — Carter Capozzi threw a 29-yard touchdown to Kyan Austin with no time remaining on the clock as Gowanda/Pine Valley wrapped up the No. 3 seed in the Section VI Class D playoffs with a 28-22 win over Randolph on Friday at Hillis Field.
Lukas Barrett set up the Panthers’ game-winning drive with an interception that he returned to the 45-yard line with 10 seconds remaining. Capozzi then connected with Trelin Warrior for a 26-yard pass down to the 29-yard line with one second remaining. That set up the winning touchdown.
The Panthers (6-2, 5-2) led 22-8 at halftime thanks to a Capozzi-to-Austin 15-yard touchdown as well as touchdown runs of 24 and 1 yards by Winter Mentley-Peters.
But the Cardinals (5-3, 4-3) tied the game with touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters. First, Jaxson Morrison scored on a 1-yard run, then he completed a 11-yard touchdown pass to Reagan Smith. Morrison’s point-after kick tied the game at 22-all setting the stage for the Capozzi-to-Austin winning connection.
Capozzi went 24 of 34 for 261 yards and two touchdowns while Mentley-Peters ran 21 times for 120 yards and a score. Warrior caught five passes for 94 yards, Austin caught six passes for 83 yards and both touchdowns, and Barrett caught seven passes for 58 yards.
Defensively, Mentley-Peters was in on 14 tackles; Isiah Washington was in on 10 tackles, and Barrett and Warrior had interceptions.
The Panthers will host No. 6 Franklinville/Ellicottville in the quarterfinals next weekend.

WEST ELLICOTT — Southwestern/Frewsburg pitched a shutout Friday night.
The Trojans’ offense was lights-out, too.
Added together it resulted in a 49-0 victory over Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove in a Class C South football game at the Sirianni Athletic Complex.
The win raised Southwestern/Frewsburg’s record to 8-0 overall and 7-0 in the division, while the Herd dropped to 3-5 and 3-4.
Bradyn Fuller rushed for 239 yards on 15 carries and scored three touchdowns; Trent Lewis ran for a score and passed to Joey Sirianni for another; George Marshall added a 1-yard TD plunge; and Brayden Potter added a pick-six.
Defensively, Marshall and Zach Markham collected eight tackles, and Roger Markham had a pair of interceptions as the Trojans, who led 28-0 at halftime, posted their fourth shutout of the season. As a team, they’ve allowed only 33 points all season.

BENSINK HAS BIG NIGHT
MAYVILLE — Thandon Bensink ran 16 times for 130 yards and three touchdowns as Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton held off Salamanca for a 28-25 Class C South win.
The Eagles (7-1, 6-1) clinched Class C South’s No. 2 seed in the Section VI playoffs while the Warriors (5-3, 4-3) fell to No. 3.
Salamanca led 13-7 at halftime after Payton Bradley ran for a 1-yard score and completed a 76-yard touchdown pass to Brendon Ghani.
After halftime, the Eagles scored three straight touchdowns. Kieffer Maytum and Clayton Smith combined to block a punt that was returned 15 yards for a score by Aiden Woodis to make it 14-13 after a Carson Fairbank point-after kick. Bensink then ran for scores of 41 yards and 5 yards to give the hosts a 28-13 lead.
But Bradley completed an 11-yard touchdown pass to Quinten Brown and a 10-yarder to Waylon Dowdy to pull the Warriors within three before the Eagles held on late.
Defensively for Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton, Tristen Gibbs 11 tackles, including two for a loss; Trent Houser had 12 tackles, including three for a loss; Bensink had 10 tackles; Maytum had nine tackles; Smith had two sacks; Olson had seven tackles, a sack and blocked a PAT; Fairbank and Walter Lukasiak had interceptions; and Lance Franklin had 11 tackles.
For Salamanca, Bradley was 15 of 27 for 262 yards and three touchdowns. Brown had four catches for 67 yards and Dowdy had four catches for 51 yards.

BLACK KNIGHTS WIN IN OT
ELLICOTTVILLE — Manny Sanchez ran for a 20-yard touchdown on Silver Creek/Forestville’s second play of overtime as the Black Knights beat Franklinville/Ellicottville 26-20 in Class D play Thursday.
Franklinville/Ellicottville led 20-12 in the fourth quarter before the Black Knights recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown. Sanchez added the 2-point conversion run to tie the game.
Andrew Arnold’s second interception of the game ended the Titans’ overtime drive before Sanchez scored the game-winning touchdown.
Will Duliba completed 14 of 29 passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns with Dom Anders catching four passes for 83 yards and both scores. Sanchez ran 17 times for 67 yards and Gavin DeLong caught five passes for 56 yards for the Black Knights (3-5, 3-4).
Blake Smith ran 20 times for 140 yards and three touchdowns for the Titans (2-6, 2-5).
