Fredonia State girls soccer downs Oneonta 4-2

ONEONTA — The Fredonia State women’s soccer team took down Oneonta in a 4-2 SUNYAC win at home on Saturday. Gabby Irwin paced the offense with a goal and two assists, while Bronwyn Madden, Grace Mackey, and Anna Ratchuk also scored.

The Devils wasted little time in getting on the board. Madden took an assist from Irwin 3:40 into the game. Irwin passed to Madden who was darting at the goal. Madden’s initial attempt was stuffed, but rolled past the goalie and she knocked it in from point-blank range. It was her team-leading eighth of the season.

Oneonta tied the game when Emma Parente found the net on an assist from Brenna Mast in the 28th minute.

The Devils would get two goals in the final five minutes of the first half.

The first when Irwin took the ball down the right side near the endline. She passed the ball across the front of the goal where Mackey drove it home.

The next score was by Irwin with 2:49 left in the half. Irwin then took a breakaway and beat a charging goaltender, placing the ball in the upper right corner.

Anna Ratchuk added an insurance goal with ten minutes left to play late in the second half.

Kaiden Ring scored for Oneonta in the 87th minute to give the 4-2 final.

Casey Fetzner made five saves for the Devils. Bryanna Meehan made four stops for Oneonta.

Oneonta falls to 0-2-2 in the SUNYAC and 2-6-3 overall.

The Devils (6-4-4, 3-1-1) travel to Cortland on Wednesday.

BLUE DEVILS FALL

IN FINAL MINUTE

FREDONIA — With the game tied 0-0, Oneonta’s Tommy Kliampas scored with 59 seconds left to give the visiting Red Dragons a 1-0 win over the Fredonia State men’s soccer team on Saturday.

Oneonta held an 11-2 advantage in shots on goal, but could not solve Thomas McDonald to that point. Oneonta led 17-3 in shots on goal and McDonald finished with 16 saves.

Oneonta’s James Cintron made three saves to earn the shutout.

Fredonia State drops to 2-3-0 in the conference and 5-5-3 overall. Oneonta now stands at 3-1-1 and 8-3-2 overall.

SWIMMING & DIVING

GIRLS WIN FIRST MEET, BOYS FALL

BRADFORD, Pa. — The Fredonia State women’s swim team defeated Pitt-Bradford 82-70 on Saturday, while the boys fell 96-43.

The Fredonia girls won four individual events, including a pair by Izzy Kleinmann.

Kleinmann won the 200-yard individual medley (2:47.01) and the 100 butterfly (1:17.64), while Lily Phillips won the 200 freestyle (2:26.43) and Kat Cassidy won the 100 freestyle (1:07.15).

“The first meet of the season is always a bit of a mixed bag as far as results are concerned,” said head coach Bill Bradley. “But overall, my staff and I were happy with the team’s energy today, as well as the improvement we can see in their skills already this season. It was a great way to start the season, and we can only continue learning and improving from here.”

The Fredonia boys won three individual events, with Landon Stanley taking first in both the 50 (25.24) and 100 freestyle (58.65). Aaron Burkett added a victory in the 100 backstroke (1:02.36).

The team is off Oct. 25 when they travel to Baldwin Wallace for a tri-meet with Allegheny.

CROSS COUNTRY

HALLBERG PLACES 7TH OVERALL AT HALL MEMORIAL

FREDONIA — Fredonia State sophomore Stephen Hallberg finished seventh overall at the annual Kara Hall Memorial held on campus Oct. 4.

Hallberg finished with a time of 26:44.8, while Edward Jourdan took 16th at 27:38.5 and Kevin Moser placed 21st at 27:50.4.

Amilcar Centeno’s 21st-place finish was tops among Blue Devils girls runners at the Kara Hall Memorial.

Centeno crossed the line at 26:28.0, followed closely by Emily Frank (24th place, 26:46.5). Siera Shenoy was the third Devil to finish. She timed out in 26:58.8, good enough for 28th place.

The Devils finished fifth among six teams.

Alyssa Horng from the University of Rochester was first in a time of 23:15.3. Rochester also claimed the team title.

VOLLEYBALL

DEVILS SWEEP BUFFALO STATE

BUFFALO — The Fredonia State women’s volleyball team took down Buffalo State in straight sets, 32-30, 25-23, 25-16, last Wednesday evening.

The Blue Devils improved their record to 6-12 overall and 1-2 in the SUNYAC.

Junior Kylie O’Brien had one of the best matches of her career, knocking down 17 kills. Maeve Musielak had nine and Emma Foley had eight. Olivia Bosweel had 17 assists and Molly Cassisy had 16.

The first set was back and forth until the Devils collected the final three points. A kill by O’Brien and two Buff State mistakes ended the set.

The Bengals jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the second set. They would hold the lead until Fredonia State tied things up at 21-all. The Devils closed the set by winning four out of the last five points.

The Devils used the momentum to go up 7-0, then 11-2 in the third set, before cruising to the 25-16 win.

The Bengals fall to 8-12 and 1-2 in the conference.

Fredonia State plays host to Canton and Oswego on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

TENNIS

DEVILS WRAP UP SEASON WITHOUT WIN

AMHERST — The Fredonia State tennis team wrapped up its fall season with a loss to Daemen last Sunday.

Amelia Stathatos gave the Devils their best chance. At No. 5 singles, she won the first set 6-4 then dropped the second by a 6-4 count. In the tiebreaker, she lost 11-9.

Daemen won the team score, 7-0.
