FREDONIA — The Fredonia State volleyball team earned its second SUNYAC sweep of the weekend, taking down Oswego 3-0 on Saturday. The Devils won the sets by scores of 25-15, 25-15 and 27-25.

Bria Hunter led the offense with nine kills and Kylie O’Brien added eight. Sasha Zayatz had the hot hand at the service line collecting six aces. Maeve Musielak added three aces and a team-high 16 digs. Molly Cassidy had 14 assists and Olivia Boswell added 12.

In the first set, things looked good for the Lakers as they held a 6-5 lead. The Blue Devils kicked it in gear with the next 10 points. Zayatz served for the final nine of those points, including three aces.

The second set was back and forth. The Devils held a 16-15 lead. Zayatz stepped up to the service line again, and helped the Devils to the next nine points to end the match 25-15. Fittingly, the set ended with an ace by Zayatz.

The Lakers took Fredonia State to the edge in the third and final set. Up 25-24 and needing just one point, they could not close out. Fredonia State scored the final three points — a pair of attack errors by the Lakers and a kill by Hunter ended the match.

The Devils are now 3-2 in the SUNYAC and 8-12 overall. They head to Potsdam and Plattsburgh this weekend.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

FREDONIA — Bronwyn Madden scored her SUNYAC-leading ninth goal in the eighth minute as the Fredonia State women’s soccer team would make that lead stand up in a 4-0 win on Senior Day over visiting Potsdam. Gabby Irwin, Grace Mackey and Abby Herbst also scored, while Irwin added two assists and Jinan Clark added one.

Abby Szymkowiak had seven saves in goal for the Devils. Irwin (57th minute), Mackey (70th) and Herbst (72nd) all scored in the second half.

The Devil offense outshot Potsdam 31-11, while collecting 16 shots on goal compared to seven for the Bears.

Irwin’s two assists give her seven on the year, which ranks second in the conference.

The Devils improved to 4-2-1 in the SUNYAC and 7-5-4 overall.

Three seniors were honored prior to the game. Brooke Grazen, Kerrigan Driscoll and Grace Mackey.

Last Wednesday, the women fell 2-0 at Cortland. It was the eighth-straight shutout for Cortland, which outshot the Devils 14-5.

The Blue Devils’ Casey Fetzner made 12 saves in goal, and Gabby Irwin and Bronwyn Madden each had two shots on target.

The Red Dragons got goals from Tyla Vuotto and Gianna Cirilla and improved to 8-2-3 and 4-0-1 in the SUNYAC.

The Devils conclude the regular season at Morrisville on Saturday.

MEN’S SOCCER

POTSDAM — The Fredonia State men’s soccer team picked up a much-needed SUNYAC win at Potsdam on Saturday.

Kye Castelluccio and Ryan Ameis both scored to give the Blue Devils a 2-0 win over the Bears.

Castelluccio scored unassisted for the game’s first goal in the 40th minute. Ameis would provide insurance with an assist from Chance LaCroix in the 65th minute.

Thomas McDonald earned the shutout in goal, needing only one save for the win. Overall, Fredonia State dominated at the offensive end, outshooting Posdam 14-1. The Devils held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Ian Schwartz made four saves and gave up two scores for Potsdam.

Last Wednesday, the men fell 2-1 to 15th-ranked Cortland Red Dragons.

All three goals were scored in the first half of the game.

LaCroix scored the lone goal for the Blue Devils and McDonald made six saves.

To open the scoring, Cortland’s Owen Brant fired a ball from the right side towards the middle of the field, and Sam LaMendola was able to flick a looping shot over the head of McDonald to make it 1-0.

The Red Dragons wasted little time adding a second goal, scoring in the 25th minute when Shay Daly curled a corner kick into the top right corner of the net.

Just seconds later, Fredonia State was able to cut the Cortland lead in half on an unconventional goal. After a Blue Devil foul gave the Dragons a free kick near midfield, there was confusion over who would take the free kick for Cortland. The ball was ruled in play by the referee, and LaCroix stole the ball and dribbled in alone on goal to score.

The Devils improved their record to 6-6-3 overall and 3-4 in the SUNYAC. On Saturday, they will conclude the regular season playing host to Oswego.
