MAYVILLE — The lights went out with 3:16 remaining in the fourth quarter Friday night at Chautauqua Lake’s football stadium.
Both coaches agreed, enough was enough, and called the game.
Truth be told, the game was over a lot earlier.
Trent Lewis ran for 120 yards and two touchdowns, threw for 144 yards and a touchdown, returned a punt 66 yards for a score and intercepted a pass as Southwestern/Frewsburg thoroughly dominated Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton en route to a 45-0 Class C South victory.
“The guys were fired up. We had that bye week from the forfeit last week. The kids were ready to go,” Southwestern/Frewsburg head coach Jake Burkholder said. “There was a lot of fanfare around this game. A lot of people marked this on their calendar. The kids came out from the get-go with all cylinders firing. It was fun to see.”

The Trojans improved to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the league with the win, solidifying themselves as the team to beat when coupled with Salamanca’s 28-8 loss to Portville/Cuba-Rushford/Bolivar-Richburg.
Bradyn Fuller ran for 193 yards and a pair of touchdowns for Southwestern/Frewsburg, which can take a stranglehold on the division’s top seed when it hosts Salamanca next Friday night at Charles A. Lawson Field.
“It’s a momentum builder. We have Salamanca next week and C/S/P the week after that,” Burkholder said. “It’s a meat grinder every week in C South.”
For Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton head coach Ty Harper — who coached Clymer/Sherman/Panama to three state championships over the past 10 years — he couldn’t remember too many times one of his teams was dominated as much as the Eagles (4-1, 3-1) were Friday. Tioga beat the Wolfpack 63-16 in the 2023 state semifinals while Randolph handed Harper’s team a 37-7 defeat a year earlier in the Section VI semifinals.
“Any time you get beaten like that, you have to look in the mirror as a coach and take accountability for it. I obviously didn’t have our guys prepared well enough,” Harper said. “I thought we got outplayed in every possible way. We got dominated on both the offensive and defensive lines. We didn’t tackle, we didn’t block and at times we lost our composure.
“As the head coach, that falls on me,” Harper added. “Any time we start to have adversity and guys aren’t able to bounce back from it, to me that says I haven’t done a good enough job cultivating an environment where mental toughness is expected.”
Lewis and the Trojans wasted no time making a statement Friday. On the second play from scrimmage, the senior quarterback took off around the edge of the offensive line and raced down the sideline for a 61-yard touchdown just 1:09 into the game.
“He’s a heck of an athlete. He’s a great leader. He’s 100 miles per hour all the time,” Burkholder said. “He’s over here throwing up and the next play he’s out there running for a 60-yard touchdown. … It’s nice to have him on our side.”
After a pair of three-and-outs, things went from bad to worse for the Eagles when Lewis fielded a Carson Fairbank punt and returned it 66 yards for a touchdown with 3:54 left in the first quarter.
“Trent is tremendous. … I don’t think we did a very good job of defending anything they did on offense, but he makes plays,” Harper said. “There were a few times we had them in third-and-long, maybe even fourth-and-long, and it seemed like every time we had him behind the sticks, Trent would make a great play.”
Then, on the final play of the quarter, two plays after a 54-yard completion to Roger Markham, Lewis ran for a 2-yard score to make it 21-0 following the third of six successful Oscar Harris point-after kicks.
“He’s got a great center of gravity. He bounces off hits and rolls off stuff, and he makes guys miss,” Burkholder said. “He can lower his shoulder and run you over as well. He put all of that on display tonight with a couple of his runs.”
Fuller added touchdown runs of 18 and 82 yards in the second quarter as Southwestern/Frewsburg’s lead ballooned to 35-0 at halftime.
“It makes it really hard to game plan. (Lewis) pulls a read run and you are wrong no matter what you do,” Burkholder said of Lewis and Fuller. “As long as we make the right read, we’re in a good spot.”
The Trojans did pretty much whatever they wanted offensively behind the line of Brayden Potter, Leo Kavic, Carson Couchenour, Zach Markham and Calvin Salisbury.
“In any football game, holding the line of scrimmage is what makes a difference,” Burkholder said. ” … We were able to continue that throughout the game.”
Defensively, Southwestern/Frewsburg also dominated in the trenches, taking away much of Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton’s running game in the backfield before it got started and forcing the Eagles into a short passing game due to pressure on quarterback Brayden Gibbs. Kavic, Jason Edwards, Tyler McIntyre and Branden Francis were responsible for a lot of that disruption.
“We knew coming in that they were very physical. Watching them on tape it was very evident that they were strong and played with their hands really well,” Harper said. “We challenged our guys to step up and be physical at the point of attack, and we weren’t.”
The Eagles will look to right their ship next week at Fredonia.
“It’s a bad night. I’ve been on the wrong side of the scoreboard before. We have to show up on Monday ready to get better at doing the little things: blocking, tackling and playing fundamentally-sound football,” Harper said. ” … If we do see them again, to say that we would have to play a lot better, would be the understatement of the year.”
