FALCONER — The way Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove head coach Curt Fischer had it figured, Friday night’s Class C South football matchup with Portville was essentially a playoff game.

Herd seniors Max Parmentier and Taylor Jones apparently took it to heart.

With a huge assist from their offensive line, Parmentier passed for two touchdowns and ran for another, while Jones amassed, unofficially, 218 yards on the ground on 33 carries and three TDs to highlight Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove’s wild 48-36 victory over the Panthers at Bill Race Field.

The win improved the Herd’s record to 3-3 overall and 3-2 in the division, while Portville dropped to 3-3 and 2-3.

Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove, which will entertain Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton in a Week Seven matchup next Friday night, certainly wouldn’t mind a repeat of its offensive performance, because last night it certainly was impressive.

In fact, the Herd used two Jones’ TDs from 18 and 58 yards, and two Parmentier scoring strikes of 11 yards to Grant Zahm and 26 yards to Brody Hawkins, the latter on an untimed down on the final play of the first half, to build a 27-18 lead at the break.

Portville responded with two touchdowns on its first two possessions of the second half — a 13-yard pass from quarterback Aidan Defazio to Adam Roe and 30-yard run by Jake Ziegler, which was set up by Kingston Loucks’ interception — to take a 30-27 lead with 1:28 remaining in the third quarter.

From there, however, the Herd took over.

On the first play after Ziegler’s TD burst, Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove’s Dylan Newman broke free for a 65-yard touchdown run and Clayton Evans booted one of his four successful point-after kicks to put the Herd back in front 34-30 at the 1:16 mark.

On Portville’s very first offensive play after Newman’s TD, Defazio fumbled, and Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove recovered at the Panthers’ 20. Five plays later, Parmentier found the end zone on his perfectly executed bootleg from the 1-yard line, pushing the Herd’s slead to 41-30 a minute into the fourth quarter.

The Herd tacked on their final touchdown after Portville turned the ball over on downs at its 44. Five plays later — aided by Parmentier’s 32-yard pass to Hawkins — Jones scored his third TD from 9 yards out.

The Panthers found the end zone one last time when Defazio, who completed 13 of 27 passes for 244 yards and four TDs, connected with Loucks on a 13-yard strike.

NOTES: For the game, Parmentier, unofficially, completed 6 of 9 passes for 121 yards, rushed five times for 32 yards and added a two-point conversion run. … Ziegler, meanwhile, paced Portville’s ground attack with 142 yards on 16 carries and two TDs, from 1 and 30 yards. … While Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove will meet Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton next week, Portville will travel to Springville.
