Fredonia State soccer teams bow out in semifinals

BUFFALO — The Fredonia State men’s soccer team absorbed a 2-0 loss at Buffalo State in the semifinal round of the SUNYAC Tournament on Wednesday to close out the 2025 campaign.

The Blue Devils were unable to muster a goal against a stingy Bengal defense that had given up just 10 goals all season.

Buffalo State scored in the 38th and 86th minutes to secure the win. Sam Gregson and Diego Rivera each scored. It was the 25th goal for Rivera — the odds-on favorite for SUNYAC Player of the Year.

The Devils had two shots on goal against Carson Smith, who earned the shutout. Freddie Butler and Chance LaCroix each had one. Fredonia State’s Thomas McDonald made five saves.

Buffalo State moves on to the SUNYAC championship game with a 13-1-5 mark.

The Devils wrap up the season that saw them win their first postseason game since 2016 with an 8-7-4 record.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

PLATTSBRUGH — The high-scoring duo of Gabby Irwin and Bronwyn Madden hooked up one last time this season, but the Devils could not take down Plattsburgh in a 2-1 loss in the SUNYAC Tournament semifinals Wednesday afternoon.

The Blue Devils took the lead in the 17th minute when Irwin scored her seventh goal of the season on an assist from Madden. Madden made a long pass from the other side of midfield to a streaking Irwin. Irwin was contested by the Plattsburgh defender, but was able to slip a shot under a diving Desiree DuBois for the 1-0 lead.

The Blue Devils would hold the lead for about 10 minutes when Kelly Licata was assisted by Lia Parker to get Plattsburgh on the board.

The game-winning goal would come on a penalty kick in the 71st minute. Plattsburgh’s Sydney Myers was brought down in the box with a wide open net. The whistle gave Myers — who leads the SUNYAC in scoring — a free kick. She ripped it just out of the reach of a diving Casey Fetzner.

Fetzner made six saves and gave up two scores, while Plattsburgh’s DuBois made one save and gave up one score.

Plattsburgh (10-6-2) led in shots (16-6), shots on goal (8-2), and corner kicks (6-4). The Cardinals advance to the SUNYAC championship game.

Fredonia State finishes its season with a 10-6-4 mark.

MEN’S ICE HOCKEY

GENESEO — The Fredonia State men’s hockey team’s trip to Geneseo ended in a 6-3 loss Tuesday to drop the Devils to 0-3 on the season. Luke Morris, Gavin Bloder and Hudson Cameron each scored for the Blue Devils.

Geneseo scored the first two goals of the first period, at 3:38 and 15:53, the first goal coming on a power play.

Just before the period ended, Morris scored on a power play with an assist from Cameron.

Geneseo would again outscore the Devils 2-1 in the second and third periods. Bloder’s goal came unassisted in the second, and Cameron’s goal came with assists from Xavier Fortin and Antoine St. Onge in the third.

Charles-Anthony Barbeau had 30 saves, allowing five goals, for Fredonia State. Geneseo’s final score came on an empty netter. Ian Vandenberg had 39 saves for Geneseo.

Luke Panchisin had two goals and an assist for Geneseo, and Carter Diceman had three assists. The Knights are now 1-0.

The Blue Devils play at Chatham on Friday, then the two teams will make their way back to Fredonia for a Saturday rematch.
