Southwestern/Frewsburg blazes by Eden/North Collins 69-21
WEST ELLICOTT — The final home game at Charles A. Lawson Field was a memorable one for 14 Southwestern/Frewsburg seniors.
The Trojans scored a program-record 69 points.
They ran for what is likely a school-record 539 yards.
The teams combined for 41 first-quarter points.
And Southwestern/Frewsburg recovered four onside kicks.
In the end, it added up to a 69-21 victory for the Trojans over Eden/North Collins in a Section VI Class C semifinal at the Fran Sirianni Athletic Complex.
Next up for Southwestern/Frewsburg is a Thursday date with Class C South’s No. 2 team, Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton, which beat Barker/Royalton-Hartland 30-13 in Friday’s other semifinal.
“We have a ton of seniors. Every game now can potentially be their last one,” Southwestern/Frewsburg head coach Jake Burkholder said. “They are great leaders and do a great job of keeping each other in check. … I think we’ll be focused and ready.”
Three players eclipsed 100 yards on the ground Friday for Southwestern/Frewsburg, Class C South’s No. 1 seed. Bradyn Fuller ran 10 times for 160 yards; Trent Lewis carried the ball 12 times for 130 yards and three touchdowns; and Miles Torres ran 13 times for 134 yards and two touchdowns.
“Our offensive line played amazing. The backs ran hard. We had three guys over 100 and a couple of guys close to 50,” Burkholder said. “Kids were excited, obviously with a lot on the line with an opportunity to play for a sectional championship.”
The hosts needed just 43 seconds to score Friday. After Roger Markham’s long return on the opening kickoff, Fuller ran for 23 yards before George Marshall scored on a 2-yard run to make it 7-0 after the first of nine successful point-after kicks by Oscar Harris.
After Eden/North Collins, Class C North’s No. 2 seed, went three and out, the Trojans needed just two more minutes to score when Lewis scored on a 10-yard run with 8:10 left in the opening quarter.
“That was a crazy amount of points. It took so long,” Burkholder said of the first quarter. “When something is working, you just have to keep feeding it. The run game was hitting for us tonight.”
The Raiders’ Brady Waring then scored on an 8-yard run before Lewis and Markham added back-to-back 32-yard touchdown runs. After Southwestern/Frewsburg’s second of four successful onside kick recoveries, Marshall capped a four-play drive with a 5-yard touchdown to make it 34-7 with 52 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
“They have some great athletes. The Nellis brothers and Waring are putting up records. With those three back there returning, we wanted to keep it away from them,” Burkholder said of the onside kicks. “It just kind of worked out in our favor and we kept rolling with it.”
Unfortunately, on the play before Marshall’s second touchdown, Fuller was injured and had to leave the game. He did not return and watched from the sideline for the remainder of the night with his knee wrapped in ice.
“It’s good to know we can bounce back and recover from those situations,” Trojans senior lineman Calvin Salisbury said, “especially losing one of our best running backs.”
Eden/North Collins scored on the first play of the second quarter when Waring completed a 10-yard touchdown to Isaiah Nellis to make it 34-15 after a 2-point conversion.
“You can’t replicate that. You can walk through it and talk about it in practice, but until you are under the bright lights, you have to figure it out,” Burkholder said of the Eden/North Collins offense featuring Waring, Isaiah Nellis and Silas Nellis. “They put up points in bunches, so even when there is a gap in the score, it’s tough to pull guys out.”
When Southwestern/Frewsburg fumbled the ball back to the Raiders, it looked like they might make a game of it. But the Trojans’ Branden Francis sacked Waring on a fourth-and-17 from the 20-yard line, and four plays later Miles Torres scored on a 3-yard run to make it 41-15.
“I saw on film that they really did not want to tackle, they weren’t a physical team,” Salisbury said. ” … We knew we could push them around.”
Another long return from Markham led to a 9-yard score by Lewis before another onside kick recovery led to a 5-yard score by Torres before halftime.
“I love when the guys who aren’t in all the time get to eat,” Salisbury said. “Getting those guys in and letting them get touchdowns is amazing — especially kids like that who have been busting their butts all year.”
After a fourth-down stop at the 2-yard line to open the second half, Southwestern/Frewsburg drove 98 yards, capped by a 12-yard pass from Lewis to Markham that made it 62-21 and Adrian Torres tacked on the final score early in the fourth quarter.
“They kind of attack everybody, put up points and say ‘we are just going to outscore you,'” Burkholder said. “Those couple of stops and turnovers we had were huge.”
Another shootout might come next week at the home of the Buffalo Bills. Although Southwestern/Frewsburg beat the Eagles 45-0 in Mayville back in early October, Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton did put 70 points up last week in a quarterfinal win over Akron.
“They are really good. We played very well against them. We have to come out flying,” Salisbury said. “Ty Harper is a great coach with three state championships. … We have to be locked in this week, focused 100 percent.”
