Area girls shine at wrestling tournaments

Fredonia/Forestville/Silver Creek, Dunkirk, Falconer/Cassadaga Valley find podium in Eden

EDEN — The Fredonia/Forestville/Silver Creek girls wrestling team earned three victories at the Eden Girls Tournament to take second place with 156.5 points behind Lockport on Saturday.

Freshmen Braelynn Wicks and McKella Hodkin won titles at 147 and 154 pounds, respectively, while junior Bryleigh Wicks won at 187.

Braelynn secured three pins and a technical fall in her run, Hodkin had four pins and a technical fall and Bryleigh pinned all three of her opponents. The Hillbillies added third-place medals from Lindsey Bailey at 116 pounds and Avary LeGrano at 154 to secure second in the tournament.

Dunkirk saw eight girls earn spots on the podium, including a pair of winners, claiming fourth in the tournament with 135.5 points.

Sophomore Kami McWillson won at 134 pounds, beginning with a technical fall and then posting three pins en route to victory. Up a weight at 140, Eva Colon-DeJesus secured a pair of pins and two technical falls including one in the final to win her bracket.

The Marauders added a second-place medal from Damarielys Cruz at 102, Gineishka Figueroa (147) and Jaslieen Morales-Salgado (237) both placed third, Audiyanna Cheverez (96) and Marlena Avila (187) took fourth and Kiomara Lopez earned sixth at 154.

Falconer/Cassadaga Valley had a pair of winners and three runner-ups to finish right behind Dunkirk with 132 points.

The Golden Cougars received a win from freshman Maliyah Stone at 96 pounds as she picked up two pins and a technical fall, while eighth-grader Hannah Evans did the same at 167 pounds.

Taking second for Falconer/Cassadaga Valley were Anastazia Hale at 96 pounds, Eliana Caldwell at 116 and Braylee McAdoo at 122, while Elayna Barber placed fourth at 128.

Gowanda came up just short of a victory, but reached the podium three times with Hayleigh Miller taking second at 109, Raelyn Diebel fourth at 109 and Brandi Washington third at 187.

Frewsburg reached the podium with Bailey Fuller taking runner-up at 187 and Riley Hawley fourth at 147.

PADDOCK HELPS EAGLES TAKE 2ND

CLIFTON SPRINGS — Another tournament and another title for Chautauqua Lake sophomore Noli Paddock.

The Eagles took third at the Midlakes “Frosty’s Freestyle Festival” Girls Wrestling Tournament on Saturday with Paddock leading the effort with a championship win at 138 pounds.

Paddock dominated her bracket with four technical fall victories, all 10-0. She finished the tournament with a win over East Rochester’s Talualah Williams-Johnson.

Chautauqua Lake just missed out on another title at 152 pounds as sophomore Lilly Hyde fell in the championship bout against Phoenix’s Gabriella Gonzales after a second period pin in 4:14. Hyde marched to the championship with three pins, but could not finish off a 6-0 lead coming into the final period.

Junior Taylor Pinzok reached the podium for the Eagles at 114 pounds, taking fourth place after beginning the tournament with two pins and then dropping her semifinal and third-place match.

Chautauqua Lake had two fifth-place finishes with seventh-grader Aurora Maring taking podium position at 126 pounds and freshman Chloe Hosier earning her spot at 185.

Niagara Wheatfield won the tournament with 169 points, Fulton took second at 162.5 and Chautauqua Lake’s 149 points was good for its positioning of third.
