Gibbs, Houser honored in Class C South

The first year of the Southwestern/Frewsburg football merger was quite a success as the Trojans dominated Section VI Class C South action with an undefeated run to the league title.
The driving force behind that was senior quarterback Trent Lewis, who went 60 of 104 for 883 yards and 13 touchdowns through the air while rushing 104 times for 906 yards and 16 scores. He also amassed 144 yards on punt returns with one more touchdown.
Lewis earned the league’s Player of the Year honors, but he was not alone with his success in the backfield as senior running back Bradyn Fuller was named co-Offensive Player of the Year. Fuller rushed for 1,460 yards and 17 touchdowns on just 115 carries.
Helping protect both Lewis and Fuller was senior Brayden Potter, who was named co-Lineman of the Year. Potter was joined on the First-Team Offense at offensive line with teammate and fellow senior Calvin Salisbury.
The Trojans were also represented on the First-Team Offense by senior wide receiver Roger Markham who reeled in 24 catches for 554 yards and eight touchdowns.
On the other side of the ball, Southwestern/Frewsburg junior linebacker Zach Markham was named the co-Defensive Player of the Year after recording 55 total tackles with 28 solo. He totaled 23 tackles for a loss, seven sacks, five fumble recoveries and an interception.
Joining Markham on the First-Team Defense at linebacker were senior teammates George Marshall, who made 59 total tackles, including 30 solo, and six for a loss to go along with two sacks and two forced fumbles, and Henry Eckert, who recorded 32 total tackles, including 20 solo, and two for a loss along with one fumble recovery.

Finishing second in the league and making a run to the Class C state semifinals was Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton during the first year of Ty Harper at the helm. He was deemed the league’s Coach of the Year.
Orchestrating Harper’s offense was senior quarterback Brayden Gibbs, who went 126 of 206 for 1,646 yards and 19 touchdowns in addition to rushing 67 times for 361 yards and five scores to earn co-Offensive Player of the Year.
Joining Gibbs on the First-Team Offense was junior running back Thandon Bensink, who rushed 157 times for 897 yards and 11 touchdowns. In the receiving game, senior tight end Asher Olson, who caught 39 passes for 642 yards and nine scores, and senior receiver Devin Hewes, who reeled in 57 catches for 708 yards and six touchdowns, were also named to the First Team.
Eagles senior linebacker Trent Houser was named co-Defensive Player of the Year after making 108 tackles, including 78 solo, 13 for a loss, one sack, an interception returned 25 yards for a touchdown and one forced fumble.
Joining Houser on the First-Team Defense was sophomore linebacker Tristen Gibbs, who made 100 total tackles, including 62 solo and 15 for a loss, a half-sack and three forced fumbles. Senior defensive lineman Clay Smith was also named to the First Team after making 52 total tackles, including 29 solo, 19 for a loss, 12 sacks and one fumble recovery.
Senior kicker Carson Fairbank was also named to the First Team after he went 46 of 49 on point-after kicks and made one field goal from 28 yards.
Fredonia senior Zach Davis was named a co-Lineman of the year recording 35 total tackles with 17 solo and one fumble recovery. Earning the third share of the co-Lineman of the Year award was Portville/Bolivar-Richburg/Cuba-Rushford senior Ty Kosinski, who made 44 total tackles, 14 solo, six for a loss and three sacks.
Davis was Fredonia’s lone First-Team selection, while the Panthers added to the First-Team Offense with senior running back Jake Zeigler. On the First-Team Defense for Portville/Bolivar-Richburg/Cuba-Rushford were senior defensive backs Kingston Loucks and Aiden DeFazio.
Salamanca was represented on First-Team Offense by senior quarterback Payton Bradley, who went 79 for 140 for 1,057 yards and 10 touchdowns through the air. The Warriors added to the First-Team Defense with senior defensive lineman Evan Spruce, senior linebacker Thomas George and senior defensive back Waylon Dowdy.
Spruce made 41 total tackles, including 19 solo, three for a loss, one sack and a forced fumble; George had 65 total tackles, including 35 solo, one for a loss and a sack, along with four forced fumbles; and Dowdy added 36 total tackles, including 22 solo.
Clymer/Sherman/Panama received the Team Sportsmanship award and the individual honor went to senior Matt Redlecki. He also joined the First-Team Defense at defensive line while racking up 49 total tackles, including 14 solo and 14 for a loss, six sacks and one fumble recovery.
Clymer/Sherman/Panama added to the First-Team Offense with sophomore running back Sawyer Whitney, who rushed for 1,035 yards and 11 touchdowns on 196 carries. Senior receiver Kameron Einink joined Whitney after making 39 catches for 599 yards and five scores. Junior kick returner Gavin Burchanowski rounded out the First Team with 15 kickoff returns for 331 yards and two punt returns for 37 yards.
Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove was represented on the First-Team Offense by senior running back Taylor Jones, who amassed 1,161 yards and 12 touchdowns on 185 carries. Providing protection was fellow First-Team selection, senior offensive lineman Tanner Olmsted.
On the First-Team Defense, senior linebacker Grant Zahm represented the Herd after making 49 total tackles, including 40 solo, seven for a loss, two sacks, an interception returned for a touchdown and one forced fumble.
Springville rounded out the First-Team selections with senior defensive lineman Bailey Oatman.
