Hilliker ‘on fire’ during Wednesday Travel League

RUSSELL, Pa. — The Wednesday Travel League was fortunate to extend its season with a special Monday edition on Nov. 24 at Cable Hollow Golf Course. Despite temperatures in the 40s, Josh Hilliker’s game was on absolute fire, as he recorded a new personal best and new league course-record 5-under 66.

His front nine 2-under 34 included three birdies and his one bogey of the day. His back nine 3-under 32 also included three birdies. He broke the previous league course record of 72, jointly held by Frank Lamattina and the late Ron Rys.

Hilliker’s record 66 is also the second-lowest round ever recorded in the league. The record of 64, belonging to Ron “Moony” Rys, was shot in 2011. Amazingly enough, both Rys’ 64 and Hilliker’s 66 were both recorded during the last week of November.

Hilliker won his league-best 15th event of the season and earned his 62nd career win, moving him past Al Etzel for third place all time. With a 74-point day, Hilliker passed Ron Szach for 13th place on the all-time points list. Hilliker also won the overall points title for 2025, successfully defending his 2024 crown and giving him three overall titles.

Brad Kelly, in his league debut, finished second with 75. Wayne Stoughton was third with 83. Jeff Marsowicz was the B Flight winner. The low round by a senior was shot by Dennis Gawronski Sr., in a tie-breaker with Jack Hood. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award, also in his league debut, was Brady Hilliker. Kelly and Brady Hilliker became the 350th and 351st golfers to participate in league play since records began being kept in 2001.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Jeff Nelson (No. 1), Josh Hilliker (Nos. 4, 6, 8, 11, 12, 17), Stoughton (No. 5) and Kelly (No. 13); B Flight — Hood (Nos. 3, 16), Aidan Hilliker (No. 7) and Pete Pinkoski (No. 16).

Closest to the pin were: Tom Sacilowski (Nos. 2, 13, 17), Gary Haase (No. 5) and Josh Hilliker (No. 11). Winners of the Steeplechase were: Josh Hilliker in A Flight and Gawronski in B Flight. Winners of the special “Turkey” contest were Phil Hopkins in A Flight and John Waterman in B Flight.

Top point winners were: Josh Hilliker (74), Sacilowski (21), and Kelly and Stoughton (14 apiece). Season points leaders (through 30 events): 1. Josh Hilliker (842), 2. Ed Tofil (522), 3.
